DP. I think it is VERY easy to have mediocre meals in Italy. It is not just the touristy areas- just like here, some restaurants are better than others. I think people make the mistake of not ordering a region’s specialty and are disappointed. As an Italian-American with a palate blown out from Western excess and spices, I found many dishes bland.


DP that posted above about squid ink pasta…it is very easy to find poor food in Italy if you just walk into any joint. It’s the equivalent of walking into a random restaurant in the US and being annoyed it was bad when you chose Taco Bell.

I am a food person, and spend about as much time planning my food journey as my sightseeing.

Yes, I’m fat but I am a darn good cook and Italy has plenty of terrific food.

Different strokes . . . when I went to Italy, I planned out every meal. We had some good ones but found the food overall to be underwhelming. With the exception of the gelato. That was wonderful.

I wish chickens had four legs and no breasts. Chicken breast has to be the worst, flavorless, pointless, useless protein in the world. I eat it like I would eat medication - because i have to, not because I would ever want to.

Turkey too, except that applies to its entire body. No part of turkey tastes good. It's like all fat and flavor has been surgically sucked out.

Mayo is gross, anything with mayo is gross. However, I have a kickass recipe for sweet cornbread that takes like half a jar of mayo and it's freaking delicious.

Anything is improved by butter.

America, thank you for your sweet potatoes. They were a discovery to this immigrant.

I eat my apple whole, core, seeds and all.

People who receive SNAP benefits should have to use a percentage on fresh fruits and veggies.

Interesting. What do you usually order? How do you plan? Through local contacts or Yelp/TripAdvisor? Maybe because we use friends who live there we get better results?

Eating the apple whole is just fine in small amounts, my dad does it too. But if you overdo it, but you can get cyanide poisoning. My brother nearly killed his pigs once because he fed them the leftover apple remnants from making a batch of cider in a cider press.

The cyanide is only released if you crush or chew the seeds. Swallowing them whole is fine. The dose is very low in one fresh apple too- what your brother did was more dangerous bc it contained more seeds per volume and the piggies chewed the seeds.

Ii saw a father in a food court with a couple little kids around dinner time. They were drinking Coke and french fries. I wonder what bedtime was like after that.


Bedtime was fine, because even if the soda did have sugar in it (did you take a sip?), the old trope of "sugar makes kids hyper" has long been scientifically debunked.

Most controversial belief:

Sprinkles DO NOT belong on anything! It's ruins the taste and they are ugly, tasteless and the texture ruins whatever item it is put on.

Awesome. When are you starting a program to GET in season fruits and vegetables, means to cook and store them, and cooking oils and herbs and spices to SNAP beneficiaries???

I am so serious, I’m a local community advocate and organizer not far from NOVA I work with some food justice folks once you have this program going we will absolutely jump in and help, advertise and get it moving to other localities!!

Ground turkey reeks, and tastes terrible. I've tried the free range. I've tried the factory-farmed. I've tried the ground turkey breast, the ground turkey dark meat, I've tried blending them together.

It is just nasty and no matter how I prepare it and how assertively it is seasoned, it has that same taste.

I love a roast turkey and I love a good turkey sandwich, but ground turkey must be literal sh!t in a package.

Not at all. I have a family member who sells his family farm's produce at DC area farmer markets. They work *very hard* and are very passionate about growing their produce without pesticides. Their farm is in Maryland and he visits his friends' farms (who also sell at market).

Also, you can just tell. Produce is super fresh and tastes amazing. It is prohibitively expensive to feed our family of 6 though.


Np. There are a ton of news stories about this. There are distributors who falsely sell at farmers markets under the guise of being locally-grown and independently-owned, but are not. That doesn't take away from the hard work your honest family member is doing.
