I thought this was an interesting family portrait. Barbara Comstock is a Republican politician running for reelection to the Virginia House of Delegates in a district that switches allegiance fairly often. Republicans tend to win local elections in this district, but are not invincible.
In the picture, Comstock is wearing bright red, but the other members of her family are all decked out in blue. The subliminal message seems to be that she can't be too much of a partisan if she has blue family members, so those who usually vote Democratic should feel comfortable supporting her as well.
Agree or think it's over-analysis? I think her re-election is all but assured anyway, but was curious as to whether others agree about the intent behind this family portrait/product placement.
If you interpreted it that way, then it worked!
But if I interpret as an attempt to manipulate my on-the-fence leanings in this race, is it working?
I do this, irrespective of the color choices, as too close to what I call the "golden retriever" shot, which is the typical "perfect" family photo marketed by photographers in the Washingtonian to the pampered set.
In this case, I'm not impressed by Comstock's opponent at all, which means I will probably, and grudgingly, vote for Comstock with about the same enthusiasm that I'll vote for McAuliffe. The only thing that makes me happy is that Gansler will not be on our ballot.
