The other thread on yogurt for the toddler made me think about my 10M old...he loves yogurt, we give him the baby kind, but when can we give him greek yogurt or at least the kind we use? What are the rules?
The baby kind is full of sugar and other crap, it's not better for babies, you've been sucker in by the marketing - just read the label. you would be better off feeding him full fat Greek or plain yogurt.
Try Brown Cow plain full fat yogurt and Stonybrook Farm plain full fat yogurt. I believe both are organic.

There are no rules. But the best yogurt for babies (and everybody, in my opinion) is plain whole milk yogurt. Greek is fine too, as long as it contains fat and no added sweeteners.
At 10 months old, the only "rule" I'm aware of of, other than cutting up foods so your kid can manage them without choking, is to not give them honey. Everything else is fine. |
We never gave our baby "baby yogurt." We bought full-fat plain yogurt.
We do full fat Greek or plain yogurt and mash up blueberries to a pulp to make it a little sweeter. She loves it.
I am having the hardest time finding full fat organic greek yogurt to the point of resorting to making my own. Where and what brands are you all buying?
I have been giving my baby Fage Greek yogurt.
the only baby yogurt I would do is the plain yogurt, because the others have so much sugar added. I don't understand why they need it. my ds loves plain whole milk yogurt, with or without fruit. the only place I've found the individual baby plain (which is basically just whole milk instead of low fat) is whole foods.

Stoneyfield makes a baby plain, full fat yogurt that doesn't have anything added. I think the only difference between the "baby" plain yogurt and their regular yogurt is that the baby yogurt comes in a 4-pack of small containers. I much prefer this to a big, regular-sized container because my baby can't decide whether she likes it or not.
She does *not* like Greek yogurt - too tart. |
I give my baby whatever Greek yogurt we're eating. It happens to be low fat because that's what we eat. Should I get her the full fat kind?
Everything that I've read says that babies/toddlers should have full fat everything, because they need fat to help their brains grow. We have steered away from Greek yogurt for our 1 year old because I was worried that too much protein would make him constipated (he has had that problem before). We give him plain full fat Dannon yogurt. At first we couldn't find it at our local grocery (they only had low fat and fat free yogurts) but now they've started carrying it.
+1 - what brand are people finding? We use Stonybrook Organic Whole Milk yogurt in plain but I'd love to find a full fat Greek. |
I buy the tubs of Stoneyfield organic Whole Milk yogurt. Plain.
+1 to the brown cow yogurt suggestion. my kids LOVE it.
