Local weight loss boot camp

Anonymous
Does anyone know of a local boot camp that meets regularly and more than once a week, during the week/weekends, that goes at a drill camp approach? I need more than just a pat on the back and saying everything's going to be all right.

I've found a couple of away camps that I might take advantage of during the summer while the kids are at camp doing their thing but I'd like to find something now. Not looking for the local gyms with tiny women/men in spandex, please.

Last year I did Active Duty Fitness. They meet 4 days a weeks at 6 am depending on which is closest to you. Mine was in Arlington. Outdoors in the warm season (Gravelly Point) and Crystal City Sport & Health during the cold months.

This sounds like what I'm looking for but darn it, too far. I'll see if they have something closer to me.

I do the Seargent's Program. They have classes all over the area. I do mine at Mann school in DC. It meets 5 days a week at 5:45 for an hour. Most of the other classes meet right around that time too.

where are you located OP?

also, the majority of weight loss comes from diet, not exercise. The latter is tremendously important for your health and will help with losing weight, but you can do boot camp daily and still not lose weight if you don't change your diet (BTDT)

Preachy, aren't you? It's common knowledge about diet.

OP, if you want "local" recommendations, it might help if you tell us where you are and/or what neighborhoods you are willing to travel to.

IN DC, some of the rec centers off this but they are terrible at advertising. I just saw something on the Petworth listserve about bootcamp at Banneker that is starting now. Park View Rec Center also had a twice a week morning boot camp that I never knew anything about until I saw some folks out there in the morning. If you are in DC, check out the DC DPR site or call the closest rec center to check.

Just curious, how "in shape" do you have to be to join these programs? I'm in horrible shape and would love to try this, but I might not be able to keep up.

You don't have to be in shape at all. Almost anything can be modified to suit your abilities. If they do sprints between exercises, for example, just power walk.

I was 240 pounds when I started and did fine. Most offer a trial period. Just go.

I don't think the PP is being preachy at all and I totally disagree that it's common knowledge about diet. Do you remember that Time magazine article a few years back that talked about how exercise is making people fat b/c while more people are working out now, they're also using their workouts as an excuse to eat really fattening foods, under the guise of "well hey, I rode my ass of on that spinning bike for 45 minutes, so I deserve a double bacon cheeseburger and a brownie sundae." There is a very prevalent mentality that working out equals being able to eat whatever you want and it's obviously not true but that's more common "knowledge" than the opposite.

OP here. Thanks for all the info. Feel like a kid in a candy shop with so many good choices (figurative candy, of course)!
