| I haven't been to the gym in 5 years. First it was an injury that put me out for 10 months, then this was followed by laziness, pregnancy, and a baby. I have the same 15 pounds to lose that I had before I got pregnant. throughout the 5 years, I've done various DVD videos and other exercise, but never the gym. For the past 20 months (pregnancy plus DS) I've walked anywhere from 2-6 miles a day. I'm having SUCH a hard time motivating myself to go to the gym today. DH and I joined one a week ago and just got cleared by the Dr. to start going (gym requirement). I just can't get the motivation. UGH. DH is off work at 5 (works from home) and said he'll take care of DS so I can go to the gym. It involves a half mile walk. PLEASE give me the motivation to go. Once I get into the routine, it is easy for me. But right now, I'm dreading it. |
I saw this quote a few years ago, and it runs through my head every time I'm debating going to the gym:
I regret it and feel bad about myself every time I choose not to go to the gym. I have never regretted going to the gym, and feel great about myself after. Take your pick! |

Think about how you will feel after your workout. If you're like me, you will feel at least a little more energy, probably more relaxed. You will be proud of yourself for mustering up the motivation and energy to go, and not beating yourself up for not going. You will crave healthier food, and junk will be a little less appealing.
Long term, you will be doing yourself a world of service. You will be showing your son the importance of keeping yourself healthy and fit, and prioritizing these things. You will be a better mother and wife. You will live longer and feel better. I could go on an on. Do it. Report back to us tomorrow and tell us how it went. We're waiting! |
| So, OP, did you go??? |
OP here. I did. And had been good about going the last couple of days. Now I'm getting sick with a cough, chest tightness, and stuffy nose. Sent DH out to load up on cold/bronchitis meds to hopefully keep this at bay. Last time I had this I was sick for over a week and that will kill my motivation! But I certainly don't want to be the asshole at the gym coughing and sneezing over all the equipment. If I end up getting too sick to go to the gym (like I am today) but not sick enough to not work out, DH promised he'd encourage (his word, I told him force) me to do some cardio workout videos so that I keep my motivation up. |

It's hard to get into a new routine especially around something that can provoke anxiety like this stuff. How about promising yourself that every day you will walk to the gym and walk back. When you get there you can promise to work out for 10 minutes or not at all but that regardless you will go there every day.
For me it would be that first step out the door which would be hard. If you build that first step in so you will do it whether or not you work out, that may help. Good luck! We are rooting for you! |
OP here. Once I'm at the gym I can easily spend an hour and a half there. So at least that isn't an issue! |
| I too am starting to get back into some sort of exercise routine and a co-worker sent me this link to a fitness page. It's run by a local husband/wife team with kids and they're all the motivation I need. They give exercise advice and post recipes. I haven't tried any yet, but the food pics they post look delish.
