Tell me about Emory University

For those who went there, what are pros/cons? For parents with kids who are looking/have looked at it, what attracted you, and what other schools are you looking at?

Tons of Jewish kids from the tristate (and pa) who didn't get into ivies

Emory is a very good school and Atlanta is a good place to go to school. I think its primary problem is that it has a bit of a chip on its shoulder because it can't quite crack the elite group of schools. It likes to think of itself on par with Duke but I think most folks would not put it in the same category, probably more like Vanderbilt or perhaps a notch below. It has many good programs and can be a great choice for students (and parents) who won't get continually frustrated by some negative comparisons.

PP here. Actually I think the students for the most part enjoy emory and like that they go there even though for quite a few it was an ivybackup.

I think JHU, Carnegie Mellon, and Georgetown have a more 'chip on the shoulder' feeling in their UG populations for being ivy/stanford/mit rejects than Emory.

Emory is hugely underrated IMO and it's only a matter of time until its acceptance rate is also driven down below 20%. For now it remains a relative 'acceptance rate value' in comparison to its rankings.

But do the Jewish kids play a large role in the life/culture of the school?

Georgetown grad here. Can't speak for the other two schools, but I don't think that is true at GU. Jesuit and somewhat southern ( at least in the old days) Georgetown is very different from the Ivies. The only mention I heard of competing with Ivies is in the 100-year-old fight song.

Emory grad here (16 years ago). It wasn't my first choice but I am so happy I went there. The teachers and administration are top notch, and nurturing and approachable. You can attend small classes if large classes overwhelm you. Lots of kids from the south and the north east, and lots of pre law and pre med. Everyone can find their niche, and I found a small group of more offbeat, dye your hair purple, kind of friends. The greek system is there but no pressure to join. It really is a great place to go to school, and I would be happy if my kids wanted to go when they are older.

My DD is looking seriously at Emory. Just out of curiousity, what were the other schools you were looking at?

8:52 here. Also accepted to Washington University in St Louis, Grinnell,Carelton (waitlist then acceptance), Barnard, Wellesley, University of Florida (home state).Rejected from university of Pennsylvania.

I first chose Wellesley, then a few weeks after all of the deadlines for saying that you wanted to go to a school passed, I regretted it. I called Grinnell but they couldn't take me anymore. Then I got a letter in the mail from Emory saying they still had spots.

When I went to Emory, I was deciding between Dartmouth, Emory, and Wake Forest.

For the non-Catholics attending GTown, the school was often a second choice. But for Catholics it is often a first choice. I think the undergrad is about 50% non-Catholic now.
