Gaithersburg area homes

What area is a good area with good schools in Gaithersburg?
People seem to either like it or try to avoid it?

There's a lot of hate for Gaithersburg on these boards, but I like living here. Stay in 20878-- look at Wooton, Quince Orchard, and Northwest high schools in that order. Good luck!

agree with PP - avoid Gaithersburg High and you'll be fine

We just moved from the WJ area of Bethesda to QO area of Gaithersburg. We needed more space. So far we absolutely love it ... we have great space and we can walk to all the amenities of Kentlands. (We live just N of Kentlands). We also have the bus down the street and easy access to metro if need be. Elementary school is great and we are happy with what we hear about our middle and high school. I also love the easy access to 270 and various other ways south (Rt 28, Seneca Hwy etc) ... although it helps I do not travel at rush hour! Another perk is we are in the City of Gaithersburg, so lots of great opportunities for our children at very affordable prices -- football, soccer, volleyball etc. We are close enough to the city but also a quick drive to Poolesville and "the country". Not everybody's cup of tea but we are thrilled. (My dh was slow to move but he is now a convert!)

Just started exploring the 20878 zip code. For those who live there, can you say what the various communities are like? what are the shopping/recreation options? I'm planning on touring soon, just wanted a heads up from current residents. thanks!

are you looking for single family or townhome? Let me know. I did a very detailed search for a townhome in 20878 a year ago so can comment on those communities. The only single family neighborhood I know well is the one where our elem school is located. West Riding is the community - the homes are older but it seems very family friendly and safe. Prices are around 400k for a SFH there. I would move there if I could.

Oh - as far as shopping - everything is close. There are lots of stores in the Kentlands and at the Rio (Washingtonian Center). The closest mall is Lake Forest. Not great - but has some stores that I go to. The better mall is Montgomery Mall down in Bethesda/Rockville.

Oops - looks like prices are between 400-500 in West Riding. When I was looking last year they were closer to 400.

I don't agree that Wootton is the only good school area you are considering. I think QO cluster is quite good. But everyone has an opinion.

Also a new high school is planned for the Crown Farm development so that could change boundaries of existing high schools. That is quite a few years off though.

You also have the option of the Poolesville magnet program.

Yes. QO is very good and many people prefer the school to Wootton...the schools have different vibes, it just depends on what you are looking for. Both are good.
