Minute Rice- good or bad.

Anonymous
My mom would surely object to the idea, but she didn't work outside the home ( simply worked hard raising 8 kids) and regular rice was less expensive. Am thinking it may be an easier side to add to small protein and extra veggies. TIA

Bad! It tastes awful.

Yuck. Just buy the frozen rice from TJ's - takes only 3 minutes in the microwave and is delicious.

Bad. Very, very bad.

Don't do it OP!

It's fine, OP. The others are just hysterical mommies. Don't give in!

The texture is really weird. Get a rice cooker or pickup some from a Chinese restaurant. Or just make ahead and reheat.

Have you actually tasted it? I'd rather omit rice from my meal than eat this stuff. It really is awful.

Frozen Rice packets are so much tastier. Minute rice is yucky!

It is fine, OP. but I tend to make big pots in the rice cooker and then zap it in the microwave on work nights. Same concept, slightly better taste.

Ewwwww no way. A pot of rice takes 20 minutes flat. My mom always taught me some shortcuts are just not worth it- some of those being minute rice, boxed mashed potatoes, gravy from a jar...

I use minute rice but only cook dishes with lots of sauce (like Jambalaya, etc.) The rice is just a vehicle for that.

I get the big box of minute brown rice and I like it fine. It is so quick to cook and tastes fine plus it is brown rice.

It is so easy to make rice. Just make sure your pot has a tight fitting lid. White rice, brown 2 cups of rice in olive oil. Add four cups of broth or water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat cover with tight lid. Simmer low for 20 minutes. Take off heat and let sit for 5 minutes. Fluff with fork.

You don't have to brown the rice, I find it adds more flavor.

brown rice is the same except I ad a 1/4 more liquid and it takes 50 minutes.

^^just to add, make this on the weekend and save in fridge or freeze it. Reheats well just add a small amount of liquid and microwave in short increments.
