The reality is that the UK and their royals still matter, while these little Caribbean islands are largely still considered third world outposts that outsiders use for beach vacations (largely holed up at luxury resorts where it’s safe). Most locals live in poverty. No wonder they have a chip on their shoulder. But at some point, they need to realize they’ve had independence and can only blame themselves for their current standard of living.

As a fellow American, I am ashamed of you. You think enslaving and colonizing a people, and stripping them of their best resources, is not going to have a lingering effect? They’ll just bounce back as soon as they have independence?

Holy toledo; I was unaware that people were that ignorant anymore.

Go find the follow up posts acknowledging the obvious fact that history informs the future while pointing out the reality of Jamaica’s complicated history with the UK.

The Brits ended slave trading in Jamaica long before others. They effectively abolished slavery before the US. England left Jamaica and was essentially drawn back to invest in nation building, effectively bringing the rule of law while building the necessary infrastructure for a diverse economy. This was post-slavery. Without that investment, …

And, let’s not forget where Marcus Garvey went. Hint: it wasn’t Africa. He happily relocated to the UK.

Nobody is defending slavery. Did you miss Will’s speech?

Rather, some of us feel the Jamaican woman who shunned Kate looked bad. You don’t do that. It makes you look bad. Plus, blaming anybody in 2022 for slavery is just pointless.

DP: Ah, yet another apologist. If “blaming anybody in 2022 for slavery is just pointless “ then what was your little history lesson about the Brits intended to suggest? You’re trying to have it both ways and, yes, some of us notice.

?

The history lesson was meant to prompt reflection on the actual history as opposed to believing modern royals believe they are white overlords/white saviors holding court over black islanders…which is what some posters have indicated.

The reality is that the Brits were ahead of the curve in terms of ending slavery, and Jamaica benefitted from the UK’s investment in the island in post-slavery times. Jamaicans courted Britain to come back and invest in the island. They did. It helped. It was the right thing to do.

Ok! I’ll reflect on all of this — while I stare at the picture of William and Kate, in her pristine white lace dress, displaying themselves in the Rover.

And no, it’s not just me.

I’m befuddled as to how anyone can ascribe racism to a vintage Land Rover that was clearly employed by the young royals and their Jamaican hosts to pay homage to the ailing Queen and her 1953 visit.

The ranting of the woman in the linked article is just beyond. No clue how or why she thinks the car equates to whites demonstrating superiority to blacks. I mean, what?

Even American Republicans aren't stupid enough to show up in rural white towns and pose grinning with dogs, white klan gowns, and firehoses. That is essentially what he did by recreating that moment down to the car. If he wanted to honor the Queen - copykating colonial history is not the way to go.

If there was a brain cell between him and his dim bulb wife, one of them would have seen that. Or kept someone on staff who could.

But then again this is the couple that welcomed the first black President and First Lady of the United States of America into their living room with a picture of a slave in the background.

The Jamaicans have stored that car for decades. The locals opted to trot it out.

The locals also trotted out the chair of slaves on another tour of the Cambridges. Charles...smartly enough - declined the false throne while visiting the same country.

If you can't see the pattern here IDK what to tell you.

Williams either an idiot. Or a racist. Or both. Either is not good for the future head of state for even a mildly diverse society like the U.K. let alone completely majority minority countries he's supposed to show leadership to.

Oh yes- the traditional welcome. Shame on you for imposing your ignorant value system and judging a culture you know nothing about.

That picture is awesome. William is aware of how to respect people and accept customs, unlike some posters on DCUM.

Sigh.

William went with guidance of his hosts.

Western media criticized him.

Charles opted to forego the local custom afterwards.

Don’t rewrite history.

Yeah there has already been a decade of discussion about why William was wrong to get in this chair from a diplomatic and cultural perspective. I believe he was 30 at the time and forgiven.

Since then he's trotted out slave portraits while hosting U.S. Presidents, ran out his pregnant SIL and only royal of African descent in the middle of winter, and insulted his Caribbean hosts with colonialist fantasies.

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, talks like a duck, its a duck.

Maybe there's something mentally wrong with him - childlike where he can't make appropriate decisions cognitively - but if the BRF admitted that they might as well admit he's not fit for the throne. Any throne.

The Daily Mail is your reference of choice for “actual experts”? That’s ….interesting.

You would think a highbrow dcumer like you would realize that the direct quotes from the expert hold the same meaning and carry the same weight regardless of which media outlet prints the quotes.

PS - Tons of prior posts have pointed to the DM to bolster their opinion that the tour was a failure.

Lol. Yes, I do know who Marcus Garvey was. The return to Liberia didn’t work. So what’s the problem with him having moved to London? Did he move there to work with the BRF or something? In your mind, what other places are off limits to Black people?

This article says the tour was a success despite the few PR missteps which the media is fixating on…unsurprisingly since it’s the negative stuff that sells papers/draws clicks.

But don’t brush past the reality that this was an overall success. They performed well.

Newsweek had a positive review too.

We were there for spring break last week, read a variety or press sources and talked with people. Everyone is happy with them coming and happy that tourism is back. Only the DC-based activist group that paid for their spring break protest trip oped in WaPO and some other blog papers tried to conjur up their own agenda.

That said, Jamaicans can do their own cost/benefit analysis on what level of Uk support they want or don’t want.

Ironically Africans legally and voluntarily immigrating to jamaica the last 200 years has been very significant. As has Jamaicans legally migrating to USA.

“The bartenders at the pool at the Holiday Inn Montego Bay definitely nodded when I educated them about how well their charming Highnesses were doing in Jamaica. So glad I could teach the natives something about the British Royal Family even though I am American. They sure listened to me!

Don’t make fun of PP. Her spring break visits to Jamaica give her the kind of deep seated knowledge and expertise of a local, something you and I could never dream of.

I'm confused. Using the word black in English is okay, but using negro (the Spanish word for black) is offensive? How about noir? Aswad? Burakku??

So if I use my native tongue to describe other colors are people offended? Azul? Blanco? Amarillo? .... this is so dumb...

I get that the ugly slang derivation of the Spanish word is offensive, but negro?!?!.... come on!

I'm confused. Using the word black in English is okay, but using negro (the Spanish word for black) is offensive? How about noir? Aswad? Burakku??

So if I use my native tongue to describe other colors are people offended? Azul? Blanco? Amarillo? .... this is so dumb...

I get that the ugly slang derivation of the Spanish word is offensive, but negro?!?!.... come on!

William called someone a negro too?

He built an advocacy career on anti-colonialism and anti-racism. If he didn’t have ill will against the modern UK and BRF during his time, then it’s odd how people in 2022 with seemingly no clue about Jamaican history believe such nonsense about the BRF.

Lol. Yes, I do know who Marcus Garvey was. The return to Liberia didn’t work. So what’s the problem with him having moved to London? Did he move there to work with the BRF or something? In your mind, what other places are off limits to Black people?

Since you are making leaps, here’s another one:

So you clearly admit Garvey abandoned his principles and took the easy way out by abandoning his people and his alleged cause to scurry off to London for a comfortable life with those he previously labeled as oppressors? Where’s the honor in that?

Or, perhaps you agree with my original point: the Brits actually weren’t the enemy and Jamaican Garvey didn’t truly hold any animus against them.

Nobody but you is trying to make fetch happen with your allegations that posters don’t think black people are wanted or belong in certain areas. Rationale people embrace diversity and don’t see evil anytime they notice different groups in a community, picture, or tour.

As a fellow American, I am ashamed of you. You think enslaving and colonizing a people, and stripping them of their best resources, is not going to have a lingering effect? They’ll just bounce back as soon as they have independence?

That was the word blocked on the picture the PP was saying racist. Personally, I get offended when my language is considered racist to English speakers, when it is really just a word to us.

Nope. I’m able to recognize when people who want to pass as being fluently bilingual are trolling. If I were truly racist, I’d be encouraging you to enjoy using your favorite word loudly and frequently, especially in diverse settings. The results might be instructive if not enlightening.
Have at it.
