US SOCCER ON LINKEDIN:

Regarding the potential change from the formation of age groups based on birth year (January 1-December 31) to school year (August 1-July 31 or September 1-August 31), the U.S. Soccer Federation has formalized a feedback process 🗳️ to gather additional data from membership.

As a casual observer have they requested feedback on specific dates to change to given the 2 options listed here? That seems significant to the narrative.

It’s odd. The first one is for soccer organizations/clubs. The second is for individuals.

No dates

Why? Because contrary to what people are saying -- this is not a done deal and it will not happen this month. Best case is late spring next year -- not in time for the next season. That is where the votes were. Maybe there is a shift but this would indicate there was no shift.

It appears that nothing is set in stone and now asking for feedback, will backfire for ECNL

Sorry I was referring to "school year (August 1-July 31 or September 1-August 31)"

Previously it was just BY vs SY now they are getting more specific with the SY options.

So wait, this second form is for any random parent to provide their input? Who is actually looking at these responses to make sense of them? And why do they care what some mom of a kid who plays rec soccer thinks?? It's not like only the parents of national level club players are filling this out...

Why are they doing this 2 weeks before a meeting?
For cover on the position that they have already taken.

When you want real input, you get in months in advance, when you want to put on a show that you care about the stance of others, you do it 2 weeks out on your announcement of the change you decided months ago.

US Soccer received flack for unilaterally switching from SY to CY so they want cover for their decision this time.

Expect a couple of hand picked examples about how my little Timmy is now jobless and homeless because of the prior move from SY to CY to create a narrative for acceptance with the change back.

Will be a different cut off depending on the state. California will be 8/1 because that’s the cutoff for most schools. Just wait and see will let each state association decide. Then ECNL will say we don’t want different cut offs and will go based off grad year. Ayso and lower comp teams will use new cutoffs.

GY will never happen because it shifts power from Clubs to Private High Schools. Why would players pay for club if HS soccer offered the same thing for free?

GY also allows held back players who are generally a year older than their classmates to play against other kids in their grade. This would kill competition and force both Club and HS teams into encouraging parents to hold back their kids for wins.

GY would be suicide for ECNL to implement. Clubs would literally leave the league because of it.

Conventional wisdom suggests it will revert back to what it was before, which seems to be what most clubs want since most were in opposition to the change when it first happened.

Agreed, and HS soccer has absolutely nothing to do with this either LOL!

I agree but there's some numbnut that keeps trying to include GY in the mix.

Well when ECNL goes to a model that resembles grad year I expect you to return here and post I am a numbnut.

I’ve heard they will have grad year for the high school senior age group. If a kid was held back they will get to compete. But it might trickle down into the high school ages.

Prepare!

Nope, clubs won't allow it.

The fact you think clubs care is adorable.
Many states have various cut offs 7/1, 8/1,9/1,10/1. You’ll have teams complain it’s unfair that this state gets an advantage over this state.
It will be Grad year. Maybe it won’t be called that but that’s what it will be.

That's not how things worked before 2018 when all the leagues were SY (before switching to BY).

Why do you think ECNL wants GY now? They haven't made any statements that GY is in any way being considered.
.

Different poster but if any change, I think it should be GY. Only issue is enforcing whether it's true. I can see people lying to have their kid play up or vice versa at the younger ages. The problem with any date other than BY is that every state is going to be different and it often doesn't match GY so you'll have kids born in August that are in 9th grade but playing with 8th graders at club. If the intent is for recruiting purposes then all players should be playing with their same GY.

Ok so you're saying that SY will become GY because schools start between Sept and July and potentially there will be some trapped players still.

Well first this is an edge case of an edge case. Second players can always play up if the cutoff date is Aug 1st.

The only group that is specifically affected are the kids held back for wins. They won't be able to play against kids in their grade. These players have to play up with kids their age.

I realize some parents are stomping their feet up and down, crying because they really want to cheat by playing down.

We all understand how "good" your kid could be if they could just play against other kids that are a year or two younger.

If you need to cheat just have your doctor prescribe HGH so your kid can "heal from injuries faster". This is the sports parent equivalent to the private school parents who cheat by holding their kid back so they can have an advantage academically.

Huh?

What don't you understand gomer?

Playing down for wins is cheating
Taking PEDs for wins is cheating

I think you lost me when you went off the deep end with the cheating rant and HGH. Sounds a little... unhinged. Hope you're ok.

As long as we agree GY is for cheaters that just want their kids to play down against competition that's a year (or more) younger.

Would you be okay with grad year of it only allows kids to play with their grade if they were held back pre announcement? Meaning parents had no idea this would be a thing and held kids back for social or academic development issues. Or is anyone who holds their kid back a cheater?

It's also clear that the decision is BY vs SY only.

The technical details around how SY would be implemented is what's being discussed.

GY is not being considered.

You're not a cheater if your held back kid plays up against and with kids their own age.

Simple issue to address. But it's not what you want to hear.
