Thank you! I thought I was the only one that noticed. I can’t stand Paula because of the abject hypocrisy she exhibits. She is in Hawaii getting a trip most people only dream of and seems completely put out. She is in a great college (I’m guessing because Olivia wouldn’t be seen dead in some low class school). She persuades Kai to commit a huge crime and then walks away with him in the lurch while tossing away any trace (necklace) that may give her angst to the devastation she left in her wake.

And I’m bummed Armond is dead, loved his character, but it needed to happen.

But Paula is the only one who seems to feel remorse and regret about her actions.

I meant to respond to this post.
Before Olivia hugged her in the bed, didn't she say something like "I screwed everything up"? I interpreted that as remorse. But you do have a good point about Olivia's hug possibly being an acknowledgment that Paula was "one of them".

If it was remorse it was pretty underwhelming considering the consequences.

In general she had a very flat affect. Seems consistent with her presonality.

I also wanted to like it and don't. The music/soundtrack is so annoying it makes the show unwatchable.
This makes me realize I haven't even noticed the music. I'm going to pay attention next episode.

It’s full of unusual rhythms and vocalizations meant to make the viewer uncomfortable.

This is the theme, but what really caught my attention are the occasional sighs (ah-AHH) between scenes.

So we watch all our shows with subtitles. The vocal “ooh’s” and “ahh’s” in the song are actually Kai and Paula having sex.

Literally, the subtitles saying something like:
“Paula: (groans) Oooooh”
“Kai: Aaaahhhhh”

It was a weird detail I wouldn’t have noticed without the subtitles.

This tweet about the score made me laugh (sound on):

I'd put my money on none of them being anywhere close to as hot as she is.

Speaking of f’d up values…

A DC "Shane" has joined us.

Sorry you're not hot.

Have you made it through Blink yet?

That's another thing, I was hoping we'd see Belinda off somewhere doing something great, living her best life. But instead you see her (along with the pregnant woman from the first episode, btw) waving from the shore greeting the new set of guests. There were all these small and intersting nuances that went nowhere.

But isn’t that the point of the show? The cycle of exploitation continues. The rich people just continue on their merry ways. Shane leaves the resort with a handshake after stabbing the manager. Paula leaves Kai to face whatever his fate is. Jennifer Coolidge leaves Belinda after getting her hopes up. Etc etc.

Yes, it reminds me of the Gatsby quote:

“They were careless people. They smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.”

Exactly.

Except the two who lost the most, Armond and Kai, were far from blameless and could have made other choices.

Maybe the subtext was everyone uses and abuses. When Kai was telling Paula about his family being cheated, I wondered if that was a con he ran.

I loved it, but I didn’t think anyone was really grotesque, with the exception of Shane and his mother. Deeply flawed, definitely. But they all really thought they were doing the best they could.

What drivel. Thinking you're doing the best you can is kind of bs and allows you to be a horrible person. People who are saying the bride was a good person didn't watch her character closely. Her husband was such a vile creature that that would not be a honeymoon surprise. Eesh. Why is everyone giving the women a pass?

Agree. She was a crap Buzzfeed-esque journalist looking for a Cinderella story and “suddenly” realized she’d need to sell her soul to stay married to Shane.

There are a million Rachel's in the DC area. Her character was so spot on.

+1. I’m the first PP and I amend what I said after watching the whole thing. The bride was also vile and Belinda, Kai, and Quinn were the only decent ppl on there, despite Kai stealing the jewelry. Paula sadly became a Mossbacher by the end. Seriously, if I had a kid like the girl in that family, I think I might die of shame, but what kind of offspring can you expect from degenerates like the parents?

Many ways-they raised an entitled daughter who uses drugs and generally has zero morals, the dad is completely repulsive, talking to a stranger about his sex life (doesn’t help that Steve Zahn is hideous), the 3 episodes of self absorbed obsessing about his relationship with his father while ignoring his kids, the tone deaf commentary on imperialism at dinner.

They also both totally don’t care about their son and generally don’t know or care that both kids are very lost/troubled.
