Ok, sure, you can say Columbia’s undergrad is less desirable (not necessarily inferior) than HYPSM. One down, thirteen more programs inside Columbia to go! |

I’d say Columbia is slightly better but close. Columbia’s law and business is better, and Berkeley doesn’t have a med school. Berkeley’s undergrad is nothing compared to Columbia’s but Berkeley’s noticeable edge in STEM and social sciences must be considered. |
I went to undergrad and grad at two Ivies but some of my closest friends are Northwestern grads. I can assure you, just because they present as sociable and “regular” doesn’t at all mean they aren’t extremely intelligent and competent. In fact, that’s part of the appeal of the school for some — the relative lack of pretense compared to some of its peers. I’d put Northwestern against Brown, Cornell or Hopkins any day of the week. |
My top 10 list

I’d put NWU as peers for Duke, Dartmouth and Cornell |

Probably not. NYC is arguably the best and most powerful city in the world and Columbia is by far its best university in NYC. Many of the people I know that go there or went there in large part because it is the best school in NYC.or for journalism. |
+1. I think the first 9 are undoubtedly top 10. The last spot could also go to Berkeley or Duke. I hope we can come to a consensus on that. At this point I don’t even want to argue about the order anymore, and let’s not waste our time to tier everything. Please. |
The fact of the matter is that there are about 13 or 14 schools that all have a solid case for being considered a “top 10” university. This is a testament to just how dominant the U.S. is in higher education. You take any one of these schools and plop them down in just about any other country in the world, and they’d be the top university in that country (by far, in most cases). |
Because of Chinese and Indian students and other international students. |
