For all the DCUMers who think Dynamite is an accurate representation of BTS

I’m so jealous but I’m too old to leave my kids at home and attend their concert. My teenager would be mortified at the the thought of attending their concert with me.

I get priority ticketing because I had tickets to their DC show but sadly I cannot go to LA right after Thanksgiving. Bummer.

I can’t make it to the west coast, it’s too hard logistically and too $$$ for me. But NY/Philadelphia or even Chicago, Atlanta, etc.? BRING IT!

Let’s hope they’re able to have one east of the Mississippi River someday. LA is so lucky to get FOUR shows.

Do they all sing? I am not that familiar with individual Kpop groups in any kind of depth. I obviously know the famous ones by name and their beats all slap like a D to the face, so I like them when I hear them (not the ballads as much, just the dance bangers) but is it kind of like the spice girls where 1 or 2 have the voices (or Backstreet) and the others just have to desperately stay on pitch for about 10% of a song? Or is it more like a 7 person boys to men who all can do harmonies and actually sing?

4 are singers, 3 are rappers. Each have their specialty in the group.

RM - rapper, leader
Jin - singer , visual
Suga - rapper, producer
Jhope - rapper, lead dancer
Jimin - singer, lead dancer
V - singer, visual
Jungkook - lead singer

Not all sing, some are mostly rappers/more of the “back up singers.” But they all have their own roles in the group and their own talents. Different songs have different line distributions just based on the overall feel and style of the song. Actually the latest episode of their web reality/variety show (called Run BTS) shows them all singing karaoke so you get to hear some far less processed vocals! https://youtu.be/MqTvohb36l8

The training that idols go through is quite thorough and all the BTS members are now competent to very good vocalists, though I’ll be honest that is NOT true of all groups, some groups really do have 2-3 people carrying the group in terms of vocals and the rest get small parts but are good dancers and/or look pretty/hot.

What does visual mean? Again I am not hating but I am just curious- does that mean they are the posh spice of the group? The Joey Fatone if you will?

They also sing and dance, but as visuals they get more prominent acting roles in music videos. These roles are simplified, BTS would not be as popular as they are if anyone wasn’t good at all roles. They are all visual and are great dancers.

BTS is famous because they are all generally good looking and good dancers but Jin and V are exceptionally good looking and Jimin, J-Hope and Jungkook are exceptional dancers. Jungkook has a solid voice as well. Suga is one of the fastest rappers in the world and has a really good flo. Watch his solo creation: https://youtube.com/watch?v=qGjAWJ2zWWI&feature=share

So this is kind of a quirk of k-pop. There are so many groups and some are quite large. I can think of a lot of groups with 9+ members, both boy and girl groups. The “visual” is the person who is generally considered the best looking and he/she becomes a “face of the group,” if you will. They tend to get more screen time and are offered acting roles in dramas, which then draws more attention/popularity to the group. There really isn’t a similar position in western groups because our groups are smaller and we don’t have as many groups overall. I mean there’s definitely members of western groups who are considered the best-looking but it’s not quite the same thing.

Sometimes people talk about the “center,” which started as a similar concept in girl groups, especially the larger groups with more members. But now it seems to have evolved as a term to expand to boy groups too and is now kind of the best “all-rounder” in the group who can do everything.

Also fun fact: you can usually tell the visual because they usually get the most conservative styling. This goes for both boy and girl groups. They don’t generally have obviously dyed hair or a weird hairstyle, and they aren’t in an outfit that’s super fashion-forward. Example: in Blackpink, Jisoo is the visual and she’s the one who’s always in, like, gowns and has natural hair and makeup in their videos while the other members dress in more unusual clothes, have dyed hair, and/or unusual makeup.

I think for BTS specifically they have evolved beyond this formula. I remember two-toned Tae from Idol, Blue Tae from Boy with Luv, and Pink Love Youself era Jin. Poor Jimin’s hair will fall out if he dyes it any more, so I think they spread it around. Jin gets his hair dyed less than others and has a conservative classic style so maybe that is because of him being the visual, I just assumed he doesn’t like it. I think their modern style is a reflection and blend of their taste and personalities now, which is why they stand out from the typical boy band group. I don’t see them wearing something like the Idol outfits again now that everyone knows them.

I also think TXT is so small they spread visual drama around a lot, maybe because they’re so small, maybe BigHit just doesn’t follow the same blueprint as the other companies.

Jin is pretty conservative in general. He doesn’t wear earrings, bracelets and mentioned he does not like to dye his hair as it burns. V is also pretty conservative and mentioned he likes facial hair like his Dad.

Colored hair on the other hand really suit Jimin. Jimin’s hair in butter is too pretty. I would see why they don’t just shave their hair and wear wigs. The constant dying is toxic.

Nooooo don't shave Jimin's head!!! I love his beautiful thick hair in any color, he's so gorgeous.

Now Hobi in Butter - wow. That is a look that he should re-visit frequently.
