NSYNC was excellent as .
I think the OP started thIs conversation as a PSA for clueless DCUMers. BTS is the biggest band in the world right now. Their music videos have 1 billion plus views on YouTube and one of the highest streaming stats on all the online music platforms in the world. |
Not my cup of (green) tea. I agree they are very effeminate. Not that that’s a bad thing. |
I mean, they are the biggest band in the world. But they are also a boyband who are targeting teens. And there's nothing wrong with that. But it is also extraordinarily normal for people in their 30s/40s/50s to not 'get' or at least not get as much enjoyment out of hot bands like BTS as the teenagers do. A rite of passage for all generations. Telling people in their 40s that the band that all the 17 year olds love is amazing has literally never worked. For the same reason that anyone decorating their house in 1995 abhored anything that looked like it belonged in 1975. Different trends different tastes etc. I guess I feel like there's nothing wrong with BTS, and there's nothing wrong with Americans in their middle age not being that into them. And there's nothing wrong with the teens and 20 year olds who are madly in love with them or the smaller number of 30 somethings that appreciate them. Different music speaks to people differently depending on the stage of life you're in and the culture you grew up in. Always has been, always will be. |
You have valid points but BTS’s owners just purchased Ithaca Holdings (Bieber, Lovato, Grande). It’s a big deal in the world of music that even older DCUMers cannot ignore. At this point this discussion might belong in the thread about finances as it looks like HYBE is going to go public:

I love their wholesome performances. I didn’t think much of the group until I dug deeper into some of their other songs. Tiny Desk Performance: https://youtu.be/gFYAXsa7pe8 |
OooooooooooH. This is so nice. Such crisp voices. Are they the first non-English speaking band to make it so big? |
BTS Week on The Tonight Show, all such good performances
Home was my favorite, they were adorable. Watch the way they destroy the kitchen haha |
no choreography, no fancy outfits, just voices.
My favorite part is when Suga and Jungkook harmonize at 3:07. https://youtu.be/L8IA_tCM-Qk |
I don't care about BTS but I'm a little nervous about what this might do to Justin's brand and more specifically that he will just walk away from making music when his best is yet to come. |
Ding dong
Call me on my phone Ice Tea And a game of ping pong Now those are some amazing lyrics. |
It’s hard for these groups to sing in English. None of the BTS members are native English speakers and (I think, I don’t follow them too closely) only RM is fluent. The fact that the song was intelligible, never mind as popular as it was, is a huge win for them. |
I guess I’ve been living under a rock - haven’t heard of them, and my teens don’t listen to them, I don’t think. I’ll have to check them out. |
Let’s see if you can sing any of their lyrics in Korean. Those gentleman have grit and have worked very hard to get to where they are against near impossible odds. They are not white nor English speakers accept for RM. Check out the audience reaction at the BBMA’s in 2019. Completely insane: https://youtu.be/W0u1R2H1iHQ |
I mostly agree with this. But... BTS’s target US audience is teenage girls. Globally, particularly in east Asia, their target audience is everyone. My 35 year old Korean sister in law (any my white brother, same age) love them. As do everyone in her family, regardless of age or gender. BTS is a whoooole thing in South Korea — not comparable to *NSYNC, bigger — and has been for a long time, and it’s not just teenagers. |
