What ever happened to Crown HS?

Anonymous
Actually crown school is only walkable to crown residents. Nobody wants their kids walking on 28 or shady grove or sem eig highway or great Seneca highway. So if some kids were bused before to become walkers for crown, that just means they lose bus service and parents have to take them to school. So imagine the traffic on these big roads.

Nobody wants their kid walking on 355 either, but that's what happens for a number of kids who go to RM. MoCo doesn't provide buses for high schoolers who live within 2 miles of the school -- they need to walk, bike, carpool, or drive.

It depends. Delays are inevitable. The boundary analysis showed that the county did not want a district-wide boundary reshuffle just to make schools more white or black. If there's a strong enough pro-busing element on the BOE like there was in 2018, they could use a combined study to accomplish a lot of what they wanted a few years ago.

This poster really, really, really wants people to believe that the sky is falling. A person might wonder why.

It sounds like PP just doesn't want her kids bused and I agree with her.

THE SKY IS FALLING! THE SKY IS FALLING!

You must be commenting on the wrong thread. We're not talking about meteorology or nursery rhymes. We're talking about the real possibility that MCPS will use the Crown boundary study to push more unwanted busing on MoCo families.

Well, how about we talk about the real actuality that MCPS will use the Crown boundary study to establish boundaries for the new high school, which by definition will result in reassignments of students from neighboring schools. MCPS will try to maximize walkers to the new school such that anyone living within the walk zone will be reassigned and will no longer have to ride a bus to high school. Yay! And those outside the walk zone will have to ride a bus, as they do now, and those decisions will be made in 2024/25 according to an analysis of four factors: demographic characteristics, proximity, utilization, and stability of school assignment. The person to conduct that analysis is the yet-to-be-hired new superintendent. So maybe we can ratchet down the fearmongering.

We won't know what the walk zone is for Crown HS until the boundary study begins.

Nobody who? Plenty of kids at SVHS and NWHS walk to school on Great Seneca Highway. Plenty of kids at QOHS walk to school on 28. Get out of your bubble and open your eyes.

You mean they’re designated walkers but have to arrange their own transportation?

355 may be slightly more walkable.

No, Rockville Pike is more dangerous for pedestrians and bicyclists than Great Seneca Highway.

The reality is that high schoolers, and even middle schoolers, walk to school all over the county on roads where the PP would say "nobody wants their kids walking there".

2 miles on these big roads? Are you kidding me? Spending 40 min each way on big roads is not something high schoolers can afford

Anyway, it will make these roads as congested as 355. Believe or not, you’ll see a lot of parents driving their kids rather than walking

Well, feel free to show up tomorrow morning and tell the high schoolers they're doing it wrong.

Well, then a lot of parents will be sitting in a lot of self-induced traffic. Or they could tell their kids to walk, bike, skateboard, or take public transportation, like other kids do. Their choice.

That will impact all commuters who need to access 200/270 and these big roads in that area. That’s just the reality.

Many of us don't get bus transportation for a variety of reasons. We all find a way to get our kids to school. We drive, carpool or figure out another plan.

And that's not a strict rule, it's a guideline. Sometimes there are buses for areas within 2 miles.

Just like all the other high schools in Montgomery County do, at arrival time, due to parents who choose to drive their children. That's just the reality.
