What ever happened to Crown HS?

How utterly arrogant. No wonder why the board acts like an aristocracy.

The Board of Education acts like 7 adults who won their elections (meaning, the majority of voters voted for them over the other candidate(s)), and 1 high school student who won their election (meaning, the majority of MS and HS students voted for them over the other candidate).

So, if you want to "vote out" the sitting board, here's what you need to do: Find a candidate you support (or run for office yourself), campaign, fundraise, and win the election. Times seven. (And then, you/your candidate get to serve on the board for the aristocratic salary of $25,000 a year.)

It's a lot more work than sitting in front of a screen somewhere, complaining.

You're absolutely right - parents should start to organize in time for the next board election. It's a great suggestion! Thank you!

Yes, that's how the democratic process works.

You may find, when you start getting involved, that there are many parents who have been involved all along; also that there are many parents who do not agree with you.

This seems odd. There hasn't been much in the way of information released about Crown HS by MCPS. How is it possible that "many" parents got involved "all along"? They haven't even done a boundary study.

"In MCPS’ current capital budget, construction is scheduled to be completed in 2026. But it’s possible that could be delayed one year to 2027 as county and school district officials consider amendments to the budget this year."

Many parents are already very organized and likely why the current BoE will be reflected in a landslide like every other past election, but sure the 2-3 right-wing posters here should organize.

Will this new HS increase property values in Crown and Decoverly?

Not meaningfully.

The ES and MS that Decoverly is districted in are less than great. This is exacerbated when compared with nearby schools. People dont usually move into a neighborhood just for a four year highschool even IF the new HS ends up being a decent one. Even then, it will take years to get a good reputation.

People with means in this neighborhood send their kids to a private school.

I live in that neighborhood and many (but not all) send their kid to private. We have had a good experience with teachers at the ES level and my child has made friends and is doing well academically but the principal is terrible, there is no PTA and almost no after school clubs. I hear the MS is not great either. Also, Crown has lost a few big restaurants recently. They are building near King Farm which part of pulls into the ES and maybe that will cause some redistricting. I still think the location is desireable though.

I think Crown will be about where Quince Orchard is. Upper middle of the pack. Better than Gaithersburg, worse than Wootton. Close to Richard Montgomery maybe a little better than Northwest. I think that’s who they’ll be pulling from

That’s what Beidelman thought as well. He made it known to everyone he was going to be principal of Crown when it opened. You see how McKnight supported him in that goal

It will not. The high school at Crown will be on Fields Road where it goes from east-west to north-south and becomes Omega Drive. Quince Orchard HS is at Quince Orchard Road and Darnestown Road.

(I prefer this literal interpretation of the PP's post to the idea that the quality of the high school can be measured by the high school's average test scores and/or the demographics of the student population.)
