I have a friend that used this one. I love her, but dear goodness, this name.

Sadly, I always think Anusly when I hear this name.

Me too. What a horrible name.

But "anusly" isn't a word. I mean, if you always though "anally" every time you heard the name Anna Lee, I could understand...

I am not really of Spanish heritage, but my (very anglo, US born) family lived in Spain and all over Latin America. My mother was born in Havana and a lot of spanish permeated our lives (my aunt has a latin name). I have loved the name Mercedes for a long time and really wanted to use that for a girl, at least as a middle name. But I know the car association is too strong, especially as we are clearly of anglo/german extraction.

Here's my question: what's the take on Atticus as a boy's middle name? Clearly a reference to To Kill a Mockingbird...is it too pretentious? First name is pretty "generic" and tame.

My dad was a civil rights lawyer & always planned to name his firstborn son Atticus. Thankfully he ended up with 4 daughters (&,no, none of us are named either Harper or Scout). He had to settle for naming the family cat Atticus but even that was short-lived as I, being not quite two when we got him, insisted on calling our new pet "Atticat". The rest of family quickly followed suit &,much to my dad's chagrin, it stuck.

So if you do end up using Atticus (even as a middle name), know that there is a retired civil rights lawyer out there who wholeheartedly supports your choice!

another multi-generation southerner here. I gave some thought to recycling some family names. I got back 4-5 generations and was looking at: Hutchings, Lanier, Poindexter, Prescott and Linthincum. Yeah...not going there.

I went to college with a girl named Lanier.

Was his name originally Peter & did he change it to Palmer when he moved from Pigeon Hallow to Pine Valley & amassed his wealth?

That actually sounds really pretty!

It sounds like Cecily said with a lisp to me.

Douchy.

No, really, I think MC had a councilwoman with that first name. I wonder if having that name predisposes you to wear like 5 polos all with popped collars

I know several Catholics with Xavier, Aloysius, and/or Ignatius middle names. They are Jesuit saints. So, probably not intended to be pretentious.
