Plane crash DCA?

Anonymous
Nobody has any idea right now if the volume of flights at DCA has anything to do with this crash, and indeed it seems unlikely.

It would make a lot more sense to jump to that conclusion if there had been a runway collision or something. There will be helicopters crossing the river no matter what.

Change the helicopter flight paths. Why on earth would you have a black hawk flying so close to a commercial jet about to land 300 feet from the ground?

I usually exhale once I can literally see the runway we are landing on.

There goes that. Guess I’ll keep holding my breath until we are at the gate. Poor souls.

Seems like an annual tradition that Congress approves more and more flights. Enough is enough. Time to cut back.

They need to build a new airport further away from the city, then shut DCA down. Reagan (like much in the area) was built in the 40s when there were far fewer people. DC has grown much too large to rely on such a small airport.

Dulles and BWI already exist as bigger airports further away from the city. DCA will never close. The House and Senate members depend on its convenience.

Do the House and Senate members need all the flights every 2 damn minutes from 5am until midnight, as it is with DCA right now? This is ridiculous.

WMAL is having a good discussion with experts.

Holy hell. What kind of training exercise would take place that close to DCA?!?

They’re doing training flights over a heavily populated area around the busiest runway in the U.S.?

Doesn’t seem wise.

Keep the helicopters away from DCA. Pentagon officials can take cars.

+1
Far too many helicopters. Never clear where so many people are going.

This person says vast majority are unnecessary, which makes sense if someone is going from the American Legion Bridge area to Bolling or Belvoir - it's like a 25 minute drive at 9:30 PM.

Jesus. Maybe go train your pilots somewhere else?!?!

Rescue workers have located multiple passengers underwater still sitting in their seat. - scanner

Maybe ice cold water will save some. I'm hoping against hope.

Doesn’t training exercises just mean “that’s all we will say and you will never know the truth?”

Maybe because in an emergency, you have to train like it could be in the real world.

Yes. Except that this incident happened so publicly - the speculation about the helicopter is already significant. This one won't be a mystery, we will find out all of it.

I think that the less common approach to the diagonal runway (runway 33/4) might have played a part. The plane they hit would have been to their left, over Bolling AFB in Southwest DC. The plane further away, coming in for the main runway (runway 1/19, which runs north-south), would have been right over the river, probably straight ahead. They might have thought they were supposed to look out for that plane and not the closer one on their left.

The plane was landing towards the pentagon?

Yes, if you look at the airport it is the short runway pointing at the Pentagon. So to approach it, you swing further east than the more common approach up the river.

But it’s hard for me to imagine that could have been a factor. It’s not like they never use that runway.

Yes, but from.the view of the copter coming in from the north, that plane would have been to their left. They might not have realized it was there if they saw the one that had just taken off from the main runway, or the one straight ahead a few miles behind, that was coming in to land from the south. They called out that they saw the plane. Seems most likely they confused it with one of those. Of course conjecture at this point.
