Whatever issues mcps has, we've reached a point in virtual culture where discourse is dominated by paid shill, and it happens as much in some local districts as upon the national stage.

You're a loon

DP but PP is correct. It's a known fact that there are/were paid trolls by Cato Institute trolling the MCPS forum.

Not disputing but noting that is one school of 213. And of course there are others. The challenge is that folks generalize the entire district as being bad which is not correct, and it does real damage.

Conversely, folks generalize the district as being "good," when that doesn't match the lived experience for many in the district. Maybe we should all agree that MCPS is mixed at best. With some schools being good and some being bad.

Not really accurate either. The truth is people get out of it what they put into it. Plenty of MCPS kids get into top schools every year.

And this is a logical fallacy. Colleges are choosing from a universe of 12th graders in the country and many, many districts are struggling. Of course some of them are going to be the high IQ children of one of the most educated areas in the country. This does not mean that those students have learned as much as they are capable of, nor does it mean that MCPS is not degenerating with grade inflation, behavioral problems, etc. Why are you so willing to accept mediocrity? School systems should ALWAYS be striving for improvement.

Talking about logical fallacy, your highlighted part is the perfect example.

Sure it does. It's not all that complicated.

OK - sure... we all believe you.

Those of us who have been around a while (hint, working in the schools and as parents) have seen and experienced the changes, and it's not good at any level, ES, MS, HS.

It could be better, but compensating for this doesn't take much. Try encouraging your child to read.

This is funny, because our kids are in college, both top 20 schools, both ED, both went to what was then called the GT program in 4th and 5th, then one returned to home school and one went to a magnet middle, and both did magnet programs for HS. I also have worked in MCPS in ES, MS and HS over the past 20 years. Our kids are avid readers, and always have been.

Having educated parents helps, but doesn't fully make up for the dumpster fire MCPS has become.

It seems you're not fully informed. MCPS is far from being a mess. The real issue lies with parents who expect the county to raise their kids for them. I have a child in the RMIB program and another in Blair SMCS, and both have thrived, receiving a much better education than I did at MCPS 30 years ago. It seems like anyone who actually cares about education is doing great.

The DCUM MCPS discourse, right here in two posts.

Thesis: The problem is that MCPS IS THE WORST!!!!!!!!!!!!
Antithesis: No, the problem is PARENTS WHO EXPECT MCPS TO RAISE THEIR KIDS FOR THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!

One group complains mostly because they're lazy and uninvolved. The other provides concrete examples and lived experience. The later is more credible.

I'm sure you'd be better served volunteering your time with Chris Cram and the MCPS PR department instead of fighting with anonymous critics on DCUM. There are "Things to Know" emails and cringey YouTube videos that you can lend your time and talents to instead. That would be a much better use of your time and energy, which is clearly aligned with doing PR and brand reputation work for MCPS.

You made this response to a poster who is on the "The problem is that MCPS IS THE WORST!!!!!!!!!!!!" side of the discourse.

The problem with mcps is that in regard to crime and violence in the district and the rules that govern how to react to it is that the mandatory reporter is damned if they report and damed if they dont.

Hello fellow RMIB parent! Even at RM, which is top of the top, I can think of several teachers who are not qualified to teach what they are teaching and - couple more who refuse to give any feedback or grade assignments in time for the kids to learn from mistakes. So it’s not all rainbows and roses over there too. The truth is that the whole country’s educational system is in crisis and not enough 20-somethings are choosing this as a field, so the schools are jammed up with few options.

I’m another RMIB parent! While I agree that my kid is getting a good education, I do still acknowledge the many issues.

First off, there are way more qualified kids than there spots in RMIB. Why isn’t MCPS offering this wonderful program to any kid who qualifies?

Also, the bathroom situation at RM is abysmal. Were you at graduation? Even the SMOB brought it up.

And yes, there are definitely some teachers who are not giving feedback and/or are not qualified to teach. There is a one CS course known to be particularly bad, for example.

Teacher morale in MCPS is terrible and rightfully so. It’s a dysfunctional and corrupt school system. Tough place for students and teachers, even at RMIB.

RM what now? Which is not to insult RM, RM is fine. There are good teachers and bad teachers at every high school, and I don't know why you would expect that to be different at RM. There are also mostly good teachers, as well as some bad teachers, at my kid's high school in Ganglandia.

You need to call the police about that. MCPS is a school system not law enforcement.

Three other regional locations: Springbrook, Kennedy, and Watkins Mill. There are also IB diploma programmes at BCC, Einstein, Rockville, and Seneca Valley.

There are criteria and application processes for all of the IB programs. I'm not sure if some sites are struggling with getting enough kids or not but there has to be a cap of some sort or maybe the cap naturally emerges since not all kids meet the criteria and also the kids have to opt in.
