I'm speaking for the middle class people I know (many mcps employees). Not those with wealth who have the means to make a move to private a much easier decision. |
I know a number of families who are desperately seeking ways and asking grandparents for help to somehow afford lower-cost private schools (especially Catholic ones), simply because of how bad MCPS has become (with no improvement in sight). |
Let me say the elephant in the room, most families are going to keep on desperately seeking. There are not that many spaces in private school. And when you start with religious private schools they are going to have a preference for those in that religion and associated with their nearby congregation(church/parish/temple, etc). What makes private school work is that they can pick and choose their students and cap the entry size. People with these visions of mass exodus of MCPS are delulu because it is not cheap nor without a lot of startup cost and energy to start a new school. Just ask the current approved Charter school. |
And yet, if you find somewhere, the county and MCPS funds will not follow you. We are in a great cluster, but due to the years long overcrowding, many choose private for their kids. No money follows. Not surprising the biggest teachers unions are against school choice, charters, and vouchers. |
The teacher's unions are against charters and vouchers because it is an unfair system. When you have a charter school in the system, they get to cap their enrollment. The traditional public school does not. They get to finally say, nope we can help or serve this student, a traditional public school does not. A voucher can go to a kid that is already is private, thus taking dollars away from the traditional public school system. Let's say 100 kids decided to go to a charter school. The funding for those 100 kids goes to the charter school. Great for them. Unfortunately for the traditional public school, their cost remain almost exactly the same, but now they've lost the funding for 100 students. |
MCPS shouldn't have a problem with that. They lost a few hundred kids when the MVA shut down. Maybe the Charter will be a good thing to bring competition and make MCPS deal with its issues and improve (wishful thinking). I'd send my kids if it weren't so far. If you aren't happy you can always go back to MCPS. Vouchers are silly in this area. There are few affordable privates and most that are good are full, so you are just subsidizing the rich who'd go anyway. |
There aren't enough schools to go to to have a mass exodus. |
