Why are Northern Kids Flocking to Southern Universities?

You also can't lump Emory, Vandy & Duke into the same conversation with Univ of TN, 'Bama and Auburn. In my DD's group, plenty of kids are interested in Clemson as their first choice, but will accept an SEC school if their other applications aren't successful. In that scenario, I think the ease of admission and financial incentives are attractive.

They are all southern. Smart southern. And party Southern.

It just happened 6 months ago. Applications aren’t even all in yet for the current cycle. It will take a few years to have meaningful numbers to quantify the impact.

The point was that it’s a real concern for many kids.

We are liberal and my child, who is more to the left of us, goes to a super liberal private. She is applying almost exclusively to southern schools. How do you think these states are ever going to get more liberal if no liberals are willing to move there? Our child wants warm weather and sports plus academics, she isn’t focused on the politics.

Is she planning to stay down there?

Shudder.

DCUM gets mad when people actually like the South.

and despite the warm weather, the South is evidently full of snowflakes.

Here’s a shocker. Ya’ll already live in the south in the DCUM area.

Very few families are writing off colleges because of vaccine mandates. Very few families are writing off colleges in red states because of abortion laws. Etc.

High school students are choosing southern colleges for the weather, the atmosphere, the sports, the fun, and yes because there are many good ones with higher acceptance rates. Parents are drawn to these schools because often the cost is lower.

End of story.

Not sure how many are doing this, but my sister/nephew aren't pursuing colleges with vax mandates. I can understand their concern, though. We all got the original shots, btw. I think people are realizing that there are risks to it, however small, and they're not convinced of the benefit, at least for young people.

I always wonder if posters like this are serious. If yes, you either have 1) little intellectual curiosity or 2) irrational anxiety (or a combination of both). But just to calm your troubled heart... folks in the south still have contraception, and treatment of ectopic pregnancies and miscarriages is not banned. AND, shockingly, if little Susie wants to use abortion as a form of birth control, her DMV mom and dad can still bring her home for a few days...
You may not like it or agree with it, but girls and parents are absolutely including this in their decision. But, this entire thread is about choice so why do you care? Kids should be able to choose whatever school they want, for whatever reason.

I’m sure some are, but applications at big southern schools, particularly out of state applications, are up by significant percentages this year, which suggests it is not a factor for many kids.

Citation? The deadline for most schools is still months away - what are you basing this on?

What are the application numbers like at ALL schools this year? It’s only meaningful to compare against totals and other regions.

GA tech up 15 percent
GA up 20 percent
Auburn released early decision and have heard apps way up and lots of unexpected deferrals but no specific numbers released (last year apps were up 60 percent)

It’s not surprising that someone who is 18 wants to spend $60k a year on a school where you’re allowed to attend parties, don’t have to take frequent nasal swabs, and aren’t required to take repeated boosters for covid. Not to mention better weather, fun sporting events and prettier women.

All schools have moved on from COVID. The South isn't special, outside of the insidious objectification of women, which is a different kind of special.

Au contraire. Mandates are still going strong at Northeast schools. Hundreds require a booster if the student hasn't had one yet and several even require the new booster for kids who already had the old one. Some families have HAD IT with the total lack of ethics, whether they say so publicly or not.

(Let's see if this post gets censored; it is common for DCUM to remove replies like mine.)

History will undoubtedly look back on these Covid mandates unfavorably. Especially mandates for kids and teens/college students. They are completely unethical and anti-science.

My kid is still in high school, but the dogmatic way some colleges (especially here in the North) implemented these mandates is scary.

I'm a Princeton alum and was very pleased to see that Princeton is no longer requiring boosters. I liked Eisgruber before for this defense of freedom of speech and I like him even more now!

Ch 9 The Story is Not Over!

Kids do care about the abortion laws and vaccination requirements because, in addition to their own issues, they are indicators of other potential issues from an ignorant, angry political climate. My kid is bi and very worried that some of the legislatures that passed abortion bans and vaccine mandate bans will also pass restrictions on LGBTQ. She does not want to be in an environment like Florida where the laws suggest who she is is not acceptable content for young people's reading material. It feels like an attack on her identity.

I think folks in the south would probably prefer that people like your daughter stay in the progressive NE. So everyone wins...

+1 Nothing wrong with different choices. Bryn Mawr and Mt Holyoke students probably wouldn't like UGA, Emory, UNC, Davidson, Vanderbilt, etc.

And you just reaffirmed the Princeton stereotype.

I haven't visited UGA or Emory lately, but LGBT+ kids are absolutely welcome at UNC, Davidson & Vandy. The issue for many of course isn't the schools or student bodies, it's the intolerance in the state legislatures.

DCUM gets mad when people actually like the South.

Which is weird because, over the last few decades, tens of millions of Americans have voted with their feet and moved south.

The people on this board do live in a bubble. Sure, the north is nice if you're the type of person who can afford to live in Arlington, Bethesda or the Palisades. If you're someone living in an economically fading area like upstate New York (I drove through a lot of those towns during law school), moving to Florida to work for Disney or Atlanta to work for a bank is pretty appealing.

People on DCUM are strangely provincial in their view of how most people in this country live.

Are northern schools seeing a decrease in enrollment? Is it just the more expensive schools having a harder time? I can believe that.

Really? Last I checked DC didn’t fight with the traitors in the Civil War.

That’s doesn’t change the fact that you’re considered southerners.

So if you go by that then all the DCUM comments about the south aren’t out of ignorance or jealousy but the hard truths that you only tell people in your family.

DP. The derogatory remarks on DCUM about the south are almost definitely made by transplants to the DC area. There’s nothing they don’t like to $hit on, including this area and any place further south. Miserable people.

Little susie has a health emergency related to any female issues DEAD!

I Know DCUM doesn't agree. Good luck with that you will be horrified in about 9 months.
