The PG Pool is racist [MD]

This is what surprises/bothers me about this discussion. Pool members are, in my experience as a regular visitor, very likely to be folks who understand the generational harm of systemic racism, who have read and agree with The Case for Reparations and other seminal texts on the need for reparative justice, etc. However, the moment you suggest a reparation action such as a weighted wait list that is local and affects them, it's all "racism was a very long time ago, you know."

This is a horrible idea. You want a volunteer board to decide if someone on the waitlist is no -white enough to join the pool? And until what? Pool demographics match census demographics? Until the pool looks browner?

I stand corrected. The implicit racism of PG pool members is now becoming explicit. Wow, just wow.

Co-signing. It’s fascinating what some people say when they get to be anonymous. I’d very much be interested in the source for their “facts” about “Most AAs”. Do these people just make things up to suit their prejudices, present them as “facts” and assume that no one will notice, care, or challenge them?

Funny but not funny: In the last two days, I’ve been swimming three times. In a private pool, that I help to pay for. I guess I’ll need to take a closer look at my values.

Is it racist that a lot of houses in Mount Rainier are now going for almost $1 million?

The community thanks you for saving the pool. You are so kind and in no way opportunistic. Given that posture, we thank you in advance for advocating to open the PG pool to the PG county public.

Altruism for the win!

It is already open to the PG county public. Sign up, wait your turn, and pay the fee. Welcome!

Yes they need to give it away for free

How is it a reparation action when the pool was open to DC originally to INCREASE DIVERSITY? And the pool would have been bankrupted if not? And there are no race requirements for entry and have not been for 50 years? And you can add a handful of lucky people only?

ACTUAL change, which I understand is much harder than just trendy word-slinging, would be advocating for PG to construct more pools and help maintain pools in low-income housing.

I live here and it's not close to a million ... yet.

Don’t feed the trolls. Talk to some actual PG pool members if you want a feel for the community. It’s the opposite of DCUM crap. Part of the reason why people want to join. It’s a lovely and welcoming group. More commune than country club.

I look forward to being welcomed in 10-15 years lol.

Well, if you of anyone had signed up 5-10 years ago, you’d be welcomed already. Just put your name on the list.

Does one have to indicate their race on a pool application?

No one said a million. They said close to. That’s close.

The current members have said that this pool is nothing to write home about. Why fight to join rather than get PG to clean up the rec center pools that are close to this location?

Does anyone even have membership race stats ? Strange thing to claim for a private pool without having the data in hand. This whole thread is strange

Of course not. That’s why it’s a stupid thread. And looking at the pictures of the swim team is also stupid because you basically need a stay at home or full time telework parent to make the 10 am or 5 pm practice times. That’s why we could never make it work with two working parents.

Joining a pool is a luxury many families can’t afford. We went to Jelleff growing up because my mom could never have afforded a membership to anything extra
