Unfortunately private swim clubs don’t have the capacity of large public pools. Add in Arlington lacks available land for building or expansion of pools.

The same situation repeats in many of the long established suburban neighborhoods in the DMV.

DP here. Did your private swim club exclude Blacks until 1975 in a place where mostly Black people lived?

Not PP but probably. The one near where I live closed down rather than be integrated.

I have zero familiarity with that pool, but pools in Fairfax County commonly have 10 year wait lists and snobby members.

I think many "private" pools in Maryland have this same challenge. Introduce neighborhood or zip code weighting for wait lists.

This is a great idea!!

The better idea is to build more pools. If the demand is there (which apparently is), then someone is missing a business opportunity here.

I think many in Maryland already do this. Mine does as does my best friend’s a mile from us.

I think it can get passed along to other family members, so Black and Brown folks (and their children) in the community never really get a chance to join. Look how long this wait list is: https://mspremium.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/sites/123/2022/05/2022-05-05-Waitlist.pdf

Racism is slow to die.

No. Current members are not able to privately sell their membership.

The wait list is first come first serve which is as open as it could possibly be.

It is not uncommon for swim clubs around here to have wait lists. How exactly is it racist for a private club to admit any random fool who signs up on a public website?

So, this pool doesn't doing the weighting thing on their weight list like other area pools? That seems like an easy solution to this issue.

This is silly. We joined the PG pool in 2011, and there was no waitlist. Previously the pool even offered half season memberships because there was so little demand. The recent upswing in demand is simply the number of families with young kids moving into Brookland, Woodridge and Mount Rainier. Are the Cheverly people pissed about who belongs to Cheverly? Because that’s where folks from the Hill go. Or Adelphi? Families with young kids are going to want to join a pool rather than go to mediocre county or DC pools.

PGP is not a fancy pool at all- just a coop with with a cement pool house and a nasty damp locker room.

Ugh. Sry, typing on phone. This pool should weight by zip code like other pools, which is easy enough to do.

What percent of PGP members are white?

There's tons of public park land right next door. I'm sure it can fit a pool.
