The old "perfectly good bike trail" trope.
What's wrong with it? All I hear is bikers saying "car bad, car bad". If cars are so bad why do you want to ride with them and subject yourself to possible injury when you could use the trail where there are no cars??????????

militant bicyclists are one of the worst sorts of humans. All me me me me

People who drive cars are so selfless. Like, we should award sainthood when you buy a car.
I drive my car on the road. I do not drive my car on the sidewalk and complain about pedestrians in my way or on the trail and complain about bikes in my way.

Yet it is the people who operate cars who control over 98% of the public space and want more. Who are the selfish ones?

Not to mention that drivers are the ones who are responsible for 98% of the traffic injuries and deaths, 98% of congestions, and 98% of emissions. I can't think of a group that does all that and yet wants more, more, more.

All me me me me, indeed.
Looks when everyone stops driving cars we can act like it. Right now it is simply not reality.

Well you would be breaking the law if you did any of those things

How do you know whether someone is biking recreationally or not?

The reason people ride in the road when there is a trail nearby is because the road is a better place to ride. Even with the cars. Many, many trails flat-out suck. They are usually designed and built by people who don't ride and know nothing about what it's like to ride.

I ride my bike on the road. I do not ride my bike on the highway and complain about drivers.

In other words-I bike on the road because I can go faster. I can't go faster than the cars, I can't stop at stop signs or red lights, I cannot possibly maintain the speed limit, I'm effing up lots of people's work commute, and sometimes I like to ride in a pack and take up the entire lane because hey my rights and yada yada yada.......

Some of the advantages of roads over typical bike paths:
* The pavement is a lot smoother, there aren't roots and potholes
* The grade is less steep
* Roads don't stop and start randomly
* Roads actually go to the places people want to go

Uh, what?

If you're too lazy to stop at stop signs, whether you're in a car or on a bike, maybe you shouldnt be on the road.

This being D.C., she is pairing this "safety" proposal with other plans to make it harder to drive a car.

This is what being captured by special interests (i.e., the bike lobby) looks like.

what's the Idaho stop?

The second item from the bill is legalizing the practice of bike/scooter yielding at stop signs and treating red lights as stop signs.

This practice is known as the "Idaho Stop" and acknowledges the need of riders to maintain momentum + reduce exposure/proximity to car traffic.

It's called lazy and they already do this. How about needing a license and plate to ride-then reckless bikers could be ticketed just like reckless cars.

I'm an advocate of the Idaho Stop, but I don't like the framing of a "need" to maintain momentum. I'd put it differently and say that the cost/benefit calculus is different for cyclists than it is for drivers. The cost of stopping is higher for cyclists, and the benefit to society is lower because bicycles are so much less massive than other vehicles and travel so much more slowly that the risk to others of them not stopping is much lower.

A speed limit is a maximum speed. Only interstate highways have minimum speeds. That you don't know this shows your car-dependent entitlement use of public space. You cannot complain about cyclists being allowed to yield at a stop sign if it is safe and also complain that you are "stuck" behind a cyclist stopping fully at every stop sign.
