This makes me so angry! I am a big pro-choicer. WHY the hell does this continue to happen even when abortion is legal, AND we have safe haven laws? What the hell is wrong with these people?

why abortion, why not adoption? These mothers are cold hearted killers. How can you kill any baby, much less your own. I hope they rot in jail |

Maybe religion tells them that abortion is wrong so they don't do it, but their religion doesn't say anything about throwing away their baby like trash.
While this act is horrific, in the long run, maybe it saves the baby and later child, years of abuse. |

If not abortion, how about dropping off the baby in a public place for someone else to find and turn over to the authorities. I guess we don't know the circumstances. It could also have been a case of incest. |

We don't know the circumstances, so usually I am a "judge not" kind of person. But if you could go to the trouble to put them in a dumpster, why not leave them at a fire station? Incest or not.
This is a crime that should be punished to the FULLEST extent of the law. No excuses! |

Are you saying that mother's reaction could possibly be rationalized away? I don't really care what her justification to herself was - - that is cold blooded murder, and premeditated at that. She's gone so far as to stay pregnant, deliver the child, and what? She puts her in a trash bag in a dumpster instead of dropping her off at a hospital where she could, um, be ALIVE? Come on. That's what safe haven laws are for. Get an abortion, have the child and keep it, give it up for adoption, or abandon it at a safe haven without fear of prosecution or identification. Abandon it to die, or kill it by suffocation after birth? That's murder. |

Which states have safe haven laws? I'm only aware of Nebraska.
The person or family would need to have access to the internet to even be able to find that information. Based on the article, I get the feeling that the baby's family did not know about these laws much less know how to use the internet to learn about safe haven laws. |

Almost all states have safe haven laws. Maryland does.
Regardless of knowledge of the specific law, you don't have to be a genius (or even particularly bright) to figure out that there are alternatives to abandoning the baby in a trash bag. You can be compassionate, empathetic, and nonjudgmental and still recognize that this was a reprehensible act... regardless of the mother's circumstances. |

| It can't be considered a cold-blooded, premeditated act if the mother was clinically insane. I'm not saying that she is, but I would certainly suspect and consider it. |

Okay, you got me there. I'd have to know more before I suspected she was insane though. Maybe it's just me, but all the instances I've seen on TV like this, the woman is not declared insane. They are usually young, scared or ignorant women who made a decision to get rid of the baby. I don't know the details of this case - how the baby was wrapped, where, if there was a logical method to any of it - but I wouldn't jump in saying the woman is insane yet either. |
