Honoring a Baby No One Loved

We need to approach it comprehensively. Abstinence only programs are a failure. Teach teens about sex and proper birth control. Teach them accurate, factual consequences of unprotected sex: disease, HIV, pregnancy. Get them to think about what they'd do if they were pregnant and had a baby now? While the mother of Maria del Pilar was not a teen, it's apparent she did not get the proper education upfront when she was a teen.

Oh my God, OP. You think this infant is dead because her mother "did not get the proper education upfront when she was a teen"?! Her mother is a very recent immigrant who had lived in the United States for only 6 months. Abstinence-only sex ed in the U.S. had nothing to do with this tragedy. And that's what it is -- a tragedy. Period. Please have some decency and stop trying to make a political point at the expense of a dead infant.

I don't recall reading that the mother was a recent immigrant. If in fact she was a recent immigrant, do you suppose she got the proper family planning information? Birth control know-how? I figure she didn't know about birth control much less about terminating. If she did, then she didn't have the money. It's not like abortions are covered my insurance. All of this lack of information leads to the tragedy. Yes, it is appalling to throw away a live being, but look beyond at the variables that contributed to the tragedy of the dead infant. Lack of information, education, options (abortion, adoption, etc.).

You know what pp, attitudes like yours will create more dead infants.

Jesus loved this child.
Her birth had significance.

Wow - I thought I'd seen everything on DCUM, but this really sinks to a new low. Ugly. OP, you went way over the line with this post, and with your responses. I'm also very pro-choice but believe that this horrific incident has nothing to do with abortion rights. Let it go, OP - you've lost even your base on this one.

My attitude that you are crass and callous to use a dead infant to make a political point, you mean? Since I'm pro-choice, and a Democrat, I find your statement hard to understand.

Unfortunately, you seem willing to shoot off your mouth (metaphorically) but are pretty ignorant of the facts in this case. According to Casa de Maryland, she was indeed a very recent immigrant. She was pregnant when she arrived here. I suggest you take your crusade to her country of origin in Central America and see if you can win friends and influence people there. Because as the PP said, you've lost even your base.

Listen, people. It's gotten out of hand. People take heinous actions out of fear and ignorance. No one is defending her decision to murder this innocent baby, especially when there are so many people willing to adopt. However, we also don't know her circumstances. Regardless of age, who knows what her mental capacity was. Was she abused? Was she raped? Was she shunned by family? Until you can walk in that woman's shoes, don't condemn her just yet. I'd like to see how any of us would react if our situation changed, if we lived in poverty, for example, or ended up abused by "loved" ones. It's a sad case however you look at it.

21:07 here-exactly the point I was trying to make-situations like this arise from a vast and varied amount of unfortunate circumstances-some topical, some not. Again, really not being sanctimonious here, but we are talking about a child that was placed in a trash bag. As a great lover of children(a uniting similarity among the diverse crowd that hangs out here) let us have sympathy and prayers for that poor child without any monday-morning quarterbacking.

The person or family would need to have access to the internet to even be able to find that information. Based on the article, I get the feeling that the baby's family did not know about these laws much less know how to use the internet to learn about safe haven laws.

You are aware of Nebraska simply because they finally enacted a safe haven law and screwed up on the age-of-child requirement, and have been in the news a lot recently as a result of that mistake. They may have been the last state to join on.

All 50 states have safe haven laws.
