And if you told him that you'd be giving him sh#ty advice. He's not saying he has to be on a good team, he's saying the level and coaching isn't good enough or a massive step change for it to be worth it. In fact, he'd probably be on a much worse team if he stayed where he is (which he was willing to do) but get all.the touches and attention (which he would definitely not get at DCU). Smart kid. The exposure DCU gets you doesn't warrant giving up your player rights to them and doesn't justify the terrible system and academy.they are running. I would tell the kid you need to think about your soccer goals and where you want to be in 4 years. If college is your ambition you don't need DCU to achieve that and the club you're in is probably good enough if you're good enough AND staying out allows you to move freely whenever you want to other stronger MLS academies or to Europe. If f professional soccer is your ambition, DCU is also not the pathway because it is a crap organization that isn't built to produce pro players. If you really want to be a pro, try to leave the DMV to go to a better academy that is close or, if you can, go to Europe. Stay far away from DCU as long as you can. If DCU is your only.optopn, take it, but also negotiate with them about your player rights and try get get as much as you can out of them because they aren't going to give you a lot. Props to this kid for knowing more about player development than you do. |
| Admin keeps deleting my responses to your attacks, so I'll leave the thread for you to enjoy |
| Let's discuss how horrible their new "residency" program is... |
But somehow this post got here 🤔 |

I’m not PP or any PP that has posted about DCU. Just a parent looking for info. But I have been reporting posts that are purely attacks on the messenger and have zero value add to the DCU academy conversation. I guess admin agreed with me. |
Reported. |
| Does anyone know if this kid will now receive the baseline MLS pro Salary of 80k per year? All while finishing online High School and practicing with the 1st team, i.e. way better development and coaching over the academy...it seems like this is a no brainer for this family. |
The problem is that he needs game time against men, but there is no way he is going to get minutes with the first team. So I assume he'll get loaned out to USL teams like that other kid, and have the USL team develop him. |
Yes by contract he will get the homegrown baseline salary which is a reserve player salary which is 80k per year. He isn't ready to practice with the first team or with men and he will most likely stay with the u19 or even u17 which is why the move is questionable. Definitely NOT a no brainer for the family. I do understand and appreciate that 80k is a lot of money for many families and I don't underestimate that. But to give up college scholarships for this is just not a smart decision. Not in DCUs system. If the got 250k, which is about what 4 years of college is running these days then I could justify that if he banked all of it. These homegrown deals are just not good for the players. And for this kid, he just Wed himself to one of the worst organizations in the MLS and threw away college money. I just can't get on board with that. Not for 80k. |
This is why having a second team is so important. You can control the roster as you please. now, DCU has to convince a USL club to take him and agree on terms. For a 15 year old with no experience playing against men, this is a massively tough sell. I see him staying with the academy for another two years. .which is why a homegrown contract at this point makes no sense. |
This part doesn't seem that bad. I'm with the posts questioning/condemning the quality of DCU, but if this is the result for this kid, then good for him. No? |
The smarter move would have been to turn down the 4 year homegrown contract and try out for USL teams for a 2 year contract. At the end of the 2 years when he's 17, tryout overseas with no one owning your rights. But now, DCU has him for 4 years and will charge stupid money if any euro club wants him, essentially blocking his move to play overseas. |
Correct. And they won't give him first team minutes either which will stall his development as happened with others. If he is in the academy for the next few years then the homegrown deal is just flat out a bad deal. |
I don’t know his families dynamics to gauge whether it is a good deal for them or not but I would prefer this option for my kid and the ability to go somewhere overseas with a track record of development. It is really appealing to win the IG headlines now which they did but development to a slow, arduous process full of delayed gratification. I only hope they know what they are doing. |
