Bethesda Magazine - List of College Acceptances

Anonymous
Im a Libertarian when it comes to Public v Private. But wow. It seems that Whitman is extremely overrated. Looks like Montgomery Blair is underrated and Churchill is the top of the heap.

It is clear that public vs private is not the same if you want to go to top 15 US News and World Report top ranked school or top 10 SLAC.

The admissions to college from elite private schools is materially better.

For a B+ or below student - it may be the same - but I for one was shocked how little success people had getting into top schools from Whitman.

They just sent out an email to subscribers saying that the data is wrong for all of the schools except BCC and WJ. They have correct info on the web site.

For Whitman - arguable one of the top 5 public schools in the country. Billed as the best public high school in the area.

Yale - 17 applied - 1 got in
Harvard - 25 applied - 2 got in
Princeton - 22 applied - 2 got in

That is about the same as the broader admissions pool.

Not impressive and not the same as the Big 3.

Public schools parents rant as rave - save your money -- in this case - it appears money was saved and the results were nowhere near the same.

Keep in mind that in public schools there is no one telling you you can't apply to certain schools. The guidance counselor might suggest that was a big reach, but really doesn't have any say on the final list of colleges. And the counselor rec is not school specific so they aren't going to be advocating one way of the other. So some of the 25 who applied to Harvard may not have been really viable candidates to begin with, which is less likely to happen in a private school.

I think those same 2 kids who got in probably would have gotten in from a private school too. And the 23 who didn't probably wouldn't have gotten in from a private school either.

I did not realize you could be "not accepted" to Montgomery College.

I wonder if this is just two students with multiple acceptances.

It does seem the magnets are doing better than the 4Ws. As it should.

Churchill is ranked above Whitman.

Exactly. Plus, schools like Whitman aren't screening students to take the 95th percentile test scorers and the legacies.

Probably 25 kids applied to Harvard from places like Sidwell or GDS. And probably 2-3 got in. Of course, it would help if Sidwell and the others were as transparent as the MoCo publics about applications and acceptances--we really have only vague ideas, and maybe embarassing tables like this one are part of the reason. A year or two ago, nobody from Sidwell got into Harvard (there was complaining on DCUM about this), but you can be certain that lots of ambitious Sidwell kids applied.

I somehow get the sense there is some "conclusion first, rationale second" analysis going on here.

Where is the private school info for comparison?

So private schools can tell a student they can't apply to a certain college? As a parent I'd be p/o about that. If I'm paying for the applications, my kid will apply where I want her to, be it from a public or private school. The results are hers to own, not the school's.
