For Whitman - arguable one of the top 5 public schools in the country. Billed as the best public high school in the area. Yale - 17 applied - 1 got in Harvard - 25 applied - 2 got in Princeton - 22 applied - 2 got in That is about the same as the broader admissions pool. Not impressive and not the same as the Big 3. Public schools parents rant as rave - save your money -- in this case - it appears money was saved and the results were nowhere near the same.
Keep in mind that in public schools there is no one telling you you can't apply to certain schools. The guidance counselor might suggest that was a big reach, but really doesn't have any say on the final list of colleges. And the counselor rec is not school specific so they aren't going to be advocating one way of the other. So some of the 25 who applied to Harvard may not have been really viable candidates to begin with, which is less likely to happen in a private school. I think those same 2 kids who got in probably would have gotten in from a private school too. And the 23 who didn't probably wouldn't have gotten in from a private school either.
