They'll switch Crossfield to Franklin, I'm sure. But, Crossfield would be at new school if they used objective standards.

Ugh, I don't want my kids to go to Franklin. Carson is such a great school.

Franklin is slated to be renovated in 2029 according to the latest CIP. If they get rid of middle school centers so that Franklin has all the in-boundary kids that currently go to Carson it will be just as great of a school. Bring back those AAP kids and watch the test scores (and school rating) go up.
I still think Crossfield should stay at Carson and go to the new Western school - but if they stay at Oakton instead then it is only logical to move them to Franklin and Oak Hill to Carson. Such an easy way to fix part of the worst split feeder situation in the county.

All of this. Carson is artificially propped up by the exceptionally high number of AAP kids coming from other middle schools. Each middle school should have its own AAP program and bussing Franklin kids to Carson should stop. And when they finally set the boundaries for the new HS they should clean up the Carson /Franklin boundaries as well.

Franklin is super close to Carson, there cant be all that much of a savings

Putting AAP at every MS would be a county-wide decision, but you knew that. Carson may be close to Franklin, but the savings would add up.

Carson is the prime example, however, of an AAP middle school whose reputation is largely derived from kids with a different base school.

There is a lot of criss-crossing and duplicate bus routes because of the AAP situation. My Waples AAP kid's bus to Carson comes 20 minutes earlier than the Franklin bus. The kids are more spread out so that one bus covers several large neighborhoods, versus the Franklin bus which is full after servicing just ours.
The real problem is splitting all the kids off outside their Oakton pyramid for middle school. They should all go to Franklin (and Carson should too if they stay at Oakton) so they'll know more kids in high school. Right now it will be such a small percentage of kids from Carson moving on to Oakton that they'll barely know anyone.

Yes. I know it hasn’t been the last few posters but I have seen several comments in this thread from Crossfield families who both want to stay at Carson and Oakton. You can’t have both. If their argument is that they are part of the “Oakton Community” then go to Franklin. Carson needs to be freed up so the students going to Western can be together to eliminate this ridiculous split feeder. If people wanted to stay at Carson they shouldn’t have/ be advocating to stay at Oakton so hard.

Carson’s base ES are pretty darn good. The school will remain excellent if the AAP program was moved.

DP and I agree.

Set up an AAP center at Franklin.

If Crossfield gets to stay at Oakton, move them to Franklin.

If Oak Hill gets to go to Western, move them to Carson.

Less split feeder and less bussing.

Why is that a problem? Sounds like a great opportunity for those kids!

It takes away opportunities from the schools they leave behind. There are fewer clubs and teams at the other schools when the motivated students (and their parents) are concentrated at one school. The same thing happens with kids leaving Lewis. It will never improve until they force a change.

AAP are not the only motivated kids. But, they do have the motivated parents.

Over the years, the overcrowded middle schools typically are AAP centers while the most under-enrolled middle schools don't have AAP.

We end up paying additional transportation costs that could be avoided if kids accessed AAP at their base schools.

It also leads to more high school pupil placements than would otherwise be the case, simply because kids want to stay with other kids from their middle school AAP centers. Again, that can distort enrollments (it's one reason, for example, why Lake Braddock has over 2900 9-12 students this year).

You get a brain drain out of some middle schools and hyper-competitive AAP centers like Carson, along with parents who toss around superlatives about their schools without acknowledging it's largely due to the large number of elementary schools funneling their AAP kids into certain middle schools.

The School Board appears to have concluded the costs outweigh the benefits; hence, they've directed Reid to come up with a plan to have AAP at each middle school. It can't be done without boundary changes, however, at some schools (Rocky Run and Thoreau immediately come to mind).

There are plenty of kids at Franklin who could start the clubs they want that are at Carson and not Franklin.

I disagree. I have a child who was not AAP and had a fabulous education at Carson - the staff is great.

Awesome just in time for them to move my kid there. HILARIOUS b/c the RIO mommies are saying their babies who have been through construction at Crossfield shouldn't have to go through Construction at Western and now our little kids who have been through construction at Crossfield will have to deal with construction at Franklin if they have their way. But you know, if it doesn't impact their 7th and 8th graders, it doesn't matter. Those moms don't have kids currently in elementary school, they don't care about anyone except their snowflakes.

Whatever. All the superlatives about Carson regularly bandied about are based on getting so many AAP kids from Franklin.
