The reality is that the UK and their royals still matter, while these little Caribbean islands are largely still considered third world outposts that outsiders use for beach vacations (largely holed up at luxury resorts where it’s safe). Most locals live in poverty. No wonder they have a chip on their shoulder. But at some point, they need to realize they’ve had independence and can only blame themselves for their current standard of living.

As a fellow American, I am ashamed of you. You think enslaving and colonizing a people, and stripping them of their best resources, is not going to have a lingering effect? They’ll just bounce back as soon as they have independence?

Holy toledo; I was unaware that people were that ignorant anymore.

Go find the follow up posts acknowledging the obvious fact that history informs the future while pointing out the reality of Jamaica’s complicated history with the UK.

The Brits ended slave trading in Jamaica long before others. They effectively abolished slavery before the US. England left Jamaica and was essentially drawn back to invest in nation building, effectively bringing the rule of law while building the necessary infrastructure for a diverse economy. This was post-slavery. Without that investment, …

And, let’s not forget where Marcus Garvey went. Hint: it wasn’t Africa. He happily relocated to the UK.

Nobody is defending slavery. Did you miss Will’s speech?

Rather, some of us feel the Jamaican woman who shunned Kate looked bad. You don’t do that. It makes you look bad. Plus, blaming anybody in 2022 for slavery is just pointless.

DP: Ah, yet another apologist. If “blaming anybody in 2022 for slavery is just pointless “ then what was your little history lesson about the Brits intended to suggest? You’re trying to have it both ways and, yes, some of us notice.

?

The history lesson was meant to prompt reflection on the actual history as opposed to believing modern royals believe they are white overlords/white saviors holding court over black islanders…which is what some posters have indicated.

The reality is that the Brits were ahead of the curve in terms of ending slavery, and Jamaica benefitted from the UK’s investment in the island in post-slavery times. Jamaicans courted Britain to come back and invest in the island. They did. It helped. It was the right thing to do.

Jamaica has changed. It's a generational change, and it's what the younger Jamaicans have decided.

+1. Well said.

The slave trade in Jamaica was outlawed in the early 1800s and slavery was completely abolished in the 1830s in Jamaica. The Brits ended it before the US did btw.

Jamaica’s history obviously impacted its future, but it’s history was very complicated. The Brits dipped out once the sugar industry spread and Jamaica didn’t serve a financial purpose. They were actually wooed back and played a leadership role in modernizing the island with the rule of law, improving the infrastructure, and building a new economy.

The BRF are not white overlords. It’s ridiculous to treat them as such.

PS - Marcus Garvey moved to the UK, not Africa. Wonder why?

Exactly.

Oh, I think that the charisma vacuum that is William and Kate bungled this, have been bungling this for years. This tour was a culmination of ineptitude. They’re not great workers. They show up rarely and when they do they’re unprepared, unenthusiastic (save Kate’s bug eyed smiles, which is still not the same thing as being enthusiastic) and entitled. I had quit following royal gossip for a few months, but Harry and Meghan do the work behind the scenes, constantly and quietly and their passion for the causes they work for is evident. It would have been entirely different if Harry and Meghan had been on that royal tour.

As such, it’s not unusual that Will’s staff is white. That doesn’t mean he’s racist.

While London is the most diverse part of the UK, it’s barely 8% black.

That doesn’t mean he’s racist, but with his racism already a huge topic of conversation, it’s certainly another thing that supports the idea that he’s racist.

So you don't know anyone from Jamaica, don't know anyone who knows anyone from Jamaica? Gotcha.

Three people who should be ashamed of themselves.

(And Marcus Garvey was born in Jamaica. You know, part of the Commonwealth. So why shouldn’t he have moved to England?)

He's lucky he went earlier. In Brexit Britain he'd have to request a visa and be denied like the Windrush generation.

Great! Thanks for the numbers! When “we are very much not a racist family” William does another widely reviled jaunt filled with white savior photo moments, I’m SURE that will go over well with the percentage of not white people in the commonwealth countries and throughput the world.

It’s not “unusual” that Will’s staff is white. Maybe you could think about that for a bit.*

Meanwhile, I’ll be thinking about the arrogance or stupidity or whatever it was that got a supposed future monarch to this point without one person on his staff or in his contact list who would pull his coat. Or, worst yet, maybe some did make suggestions and got overruled.

* If you’d like some nudges in that direction, I’d be happy to start another thread to discuss all of the white spaces that are “not unusual “ in countries like ours with quite different stats, and the history behind their persistence.

Do you even know who Garvey was or why he was an important figure? He literally led the movement for blacks to return to Africa. He built an advocacy career on anti-colonialism and anti-racism. If he didn’t have ill will against the modern UK and BRF during his time, then it’s odd how people in 2022 with seemingly no clue about Jamaican history believe such nonsense about the BRF.

Correct.

The UK has strict border protections including visas. Why? Because they noticed a pattern of illegal economic migration from places like Jamaica.

Generally speaking, Americans don’t do this. They travel abroad on vacation, but come home.

And what is the Asian population of the UK and London, specifically?

Per this UK government link: https://www.ethnicity-facts-figures.service.gov.uk/uk-population-by-ethnicity/national-and-regional-populations/regional-ethnic-diversity/latest

As at the 2011 Census, the most ethnically diverse region in England and Wales was London, where 40.2% of residents identified with either the Asian, Black, Mixed or Other ethnic group.

I love where this conversation is going. If the BRF thinks discarding black people is fine and dandy, that's all on them. That tour of the U.S. the Cambridges have been begging for is going to be one for the record books.

How has the BRF discarded black people?
