I think she’s just really good at accents. According to other posters with knowledge of Spain’s regional accents, hers is quite good when speaking Spanish. I’m also extremely good at accents even though I only speak bits of other languages. But I do it extremely well so can fool people into thinking I am more fluent than I am. (For the record I have always admitted the truth—that I’m just good at picking up accents)

My H is like this. He knows maybe 20 words in my language, but he has a good accent and he doesn't hesitate, so people are impressed.

What do you think, should I become a Russian or something else?

We’ll take you, baryshnya! Not too popular these days! I will personally arrange a date with Sergei Polunin for you.

This. It's not uncommon for people to be really good with accents. I know a good number of people who are. I'm pretty good with the Spanish accent too as my native language bears a lot of similarities with Spanish words and phonetics. In fact, even native Spanish speakers have had me pegged as someone from a Latin American country. My vocabulary (like Hilaria's) is very basic though and I'm also not pretending to be from somewhere I'm not.

Hilaria means "hills of Restalyne" in Spanish

Do you think her family members are all ‘Oh, Hilaria, you poor thing!’, or do you think they’re rolling their eyes and saying, well, what did you *think* was going to happen?

Probably both. Alec is doubling down and posting that she lived in Spain for YEARS. Either he's a complete liar or he's been persistently and consistently lied to by H and others. I imagine they've been equally vague about their lives prior to meeting him, and misdirected him when he got close to the truth.

I worked with someone that turned out to be living a double life and even just a coworker doing that blew my mind and left me confused and angry. I cannot imagine finding out my spouse wasn't who they say they are. I see they've stopped feeding the cycle with new information for people to analyze so maybe this will die down and he can do some reflection. She does seem otherwise harmless, and her flaws are similar to his flaws, so hopefully this doesn't damage their family.

They must be used to her shenanigans by now.

In an alternate universe, some poor woman is starting a thread on a DCUMish site and/or writing Carolyn Hax: "SIL's Spanish schtick has gone off the deep end. Should I say something?"

Ooh. What sort of double life?

Or I can see that happening on this site, under family relationships. "My SIL identiies as French Canadian bc she spent a layover in Quebec "

I won't go into huge specifics but he talked to me everyday about his life, and it was 100% BS. Then he killed himself, and since I was his manager I found out, the the course of interacting with his next of kin, that it was all lies. This was particularly concerning because of the sensitive nature of his job, but thankfully he didn't do anything he shouldn't have in that realm apart from lie constantly about his personal circumstances and activities.

I think this is why I couch all my responses on this thread with some degree of empathy for H and A. H's lies about Spain are inconsequential in the larger sense, but have the potential to shatter everything and I don't want her to do anything truly dumb and irreversible.

Ireland also defended Hilaria on Insta. I wonder how she really feels about everything. They're only like 12-13 years apart.

Face the rath of dad or support her obnoxious stepmother? Easy choice.

Sorry, why? It doesn't appear thst Chrissy Teigen lied about her ethnicity. I just don't see what's wrong w marrying a successful and famous man if you aren't doing a whole charade about your ethnic and national background
You're missing what those women have in common. They have completely capitalized on their marriages because they have so little else going on in their own lives. Contrast them with someone like Clooney's wife or Steve Martin's wife.
Indeed. But Chrissy isn't quite so bad although she's just an idiot. The other thing the women have in common is the guys were all emotionally and or mentally fragile. John Legend is fine and always has been.
Chrissy Tiegen ans Meghan Markle were highly successful in their own lives before marrying celebrities. And Chrissy Tiegen is super smart. You don’t get as funny as she is without a brain.

Ireland still has to hear about the "rude little pig" incident, 13 years later. I wouldn't be doing my dad too many favors if I were in her shoes. But who wants to alienate the gravy train?

"I kinda just wanna say leave me alone. Leave me alone," she added. "I'm not doing anything wrong by being me. Maybe that doesn't look like somebody who you've met before, but, I mean, isn't that the beauty of diversity? ... This is not someone that's pretending to be something else, it's literally just you have two cultures."

Jesus Christ. This lady is insane. “This is not someone that’s pretending ...”

THAT IS LITERALLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING.
