The reality is that the UK and their royals still matter, while these little Caribbean islands are largely still considered third world outposts that outsiders use for beach vacations (largely holed up at luxury resorts where it’s safe). Most locals live in poverty. No wonder they have a chip on their shoulder. But at some point, they need to realize they’ve had independence and can only blame themselves for their current standard of living.

As an American, it’s really horrifying to realize how poorly educated some people are — particularly the ones who think that the atrocities of the past are somehow not prologues to the events and circumstances of the present and the future.

tldr: When even Prince William is more enlightened than you are….

?

Everyone knows about the history. Colonialism. Slavery.

Should the Bidens be snubbed and treated rudely when hosted abroad? I mean, American history includes atrocities around the world…with many more atrocities having occurred in recent years/decades while Biden was in office.

Point being: when you are on display on the world stage with cameras everywhere, you behave in a dignified way.

Will and Kate behaved appropriately. Some of their hosts did not.

Historic events should not impact how you treat anyone—especially guests you are hosting.

Which hosts behaved inappropriately— in your mind? The ones who told the truth, politely and directly?

If you believe that historic events should not impact how you treat everyone, then all the more reason for William to avoid those multiple cringe-y moments of happily being carried around in sedan chairs and ancient Rovers for the white savior photo ops.

Your opinion doesn’t really matter.

You are looking through a skewed lens fixated on historic racialized colonialism if all you see are “white savior” photo ops.

What would please you? If the BRF ignored the commonwealth and avoided visits? If they showed up in jeans and jumpers with dour expressions and solely discussed the evils from generations ago? Sounds fun.

Will did address the history btw. He did it rather deftly at the appropriate time and setting.

Lol Of course my opinion doesn’t really matter. Just as your opinions don’t really matter to anyone but you. Shrug.

And yes, my lens IS skewed, as is yours. Mighty white of you to mention that. FWIW, I saw pretty dresses too — although, yes, some of them carried forth the white savior motif all to well. I’m sure they did their best though, as, no doubt, you do as well.

+1. It’s the white Karens who are like “Jamaicans and other POC need to be gracious to their white overlords”

+1000

Also let’s just get real. William has ZERO charisma. He’s even stodgier than Charles. That’s the issue and the problem and why it’s all gonna fall apart when the Queen dies. Sure Kate is pretty but she auditioned for over a decade for the role and is now playing it to a tee but we never see her. Does she have a personality? It’s like these two are cardboard cutouts. It’s a snore fest.

It still blows me away that they didnt see the appeal of Meghan and Harry - two likeable people that encapsulated progressiveness. How could they not see this?!
They did see the appeal- that was the problem. M&H we’re getting to be too popular. So the knives came out.

The BRF? Why and to whom?

For whatever reason, the BRF has a tremendous global following. That’s just a fact. You really can’t argue with that fact. If nobody cared, the media wouldn’t cover them…and we wouldn’t have so many threads on dcum.

"Matter" as in some people pay attention to them? Sure. Some people also watch Real Housewives. Some collect tiny spoons.

But if the BRF were abolished or there were no more reality TV or useless collectibles, the world at large would carry on without a hiccup.

You might want to poll the commonwealth before making that grand statement.

As a fellow American, I am ashamed of you. You think enslaving and colonizing a people, and stripping them of their best resources, is not going to have a lingering effect? They’ll just bounce back as soon as they have independence?

The slave trade in Jamaica was outlawed in the early 1800s and slavery was completely abolished in the 1830s in Jamaica. The Brits ended it before the US did btw.

Jamaica’s history obviously impacted its future, but it’s history was very complicated. The Brits dipped out once the sugar industry spread and Jamaica didn’t serve a financial purpose. They were actually wooed back and played a leadership role in modernizing the island with the rule of law, improving the infrastructure, and building a new economy.

The BRF are not white overlords. It’s ridiculous to treat them as such.

PS - Marcus Garvey moved to the UK, not Africa. Wonder why?

As an American woman in her early 50s, I watched Princess Diana marry Prince Charles. I will always be interested in the lives of Lady Di's sons. Many people loved Princess Di.

Scroll to the end of the article where Will literally says all the right things about the evolving relationships of the commonwealth and how the BRF supports whatever decision any island makes about stepping out.

What more could he have said? He did a great job. This is practically a goodbye tour to the old ways.

All I know is thanks to Duchess Kate, I am rocking some fashion sneakers (kicks) this spring and summer.

I think William did ok. However, a lot of disastrous portions of the tour could have been avoided by having a better and more diverse staff which is squarely his responsibility. Taking a photo with your brown subjects reaching through a chain link fence? Planning on having an event in Belize to take place on land that you know is disputed between the organization you lead and the indigenous population? All very amateurish.

Love Kate and Willis! Their speeches were lovely and they were doing exactly what the queen asked of them. She should be proud.

Did you notice that the Jamaican man next to him also stepped back? I’d love to see the full clip. They both look like they were stepping back from something else.

This tour is honestly quite a success for Prince Charles because it really shows that the Cambridges are still green despite people like Gary Goldsmith say they should skip him in favors of Kate and William. There was a lot less drama when Charles went to Barbados when they officially left.

You’re sadly correct - even though i feel like if the message was clear from the top of support for M&H, w&k would have fallen in place. Also not helping w the press issues that were thrown at meghan.
Too late now!

They aren’t green. They’re awful. Two forty-year-olds sent on a tour and both countries announce they’re leaving the Commonwealth before it’s over?
