Gymnastics in MoCo Schools?

Anonymous
Hello Folks,

Does anyone know of a Middle/High school in MoCo that offers gymnastics?
thanks

Several high schools have gymnastics. I don't think any MSs do as I think the interscholastic sports for MS are limited to soccer, XC, softball and basketball. Look on the school websites, or on the MSSPSA website. I am pretty sure Whitman and BCC have gymnastics teams.

Blake has a team as well, but it's only for girls. Don't know if any of the other schools have boys teams.

You are right, they are all girls teams and of course I have a son.

Is your son on a club team? There are clubs in MoCo that have boys teams.

There have been cases (although I'm not sure if any were in Maryland) where boys have competed on girls' high school gymnastics teams. Of course, he'd be on the girls equipment, which isn't ideal.

here's the link to the MCPS website on HS and MS sports. You can google gymnastics county championships to find out who competed in the gymnastics counties - that will tell you who has a team.

I know at our school the more competitive girls are also doing club gymnastics.

So only some schools have specific sports? That seems strange.

While I understand being somewhat disappointed, male gymnasts don't peak until very late high-school/college anyway. If he's incredible, focus on getting to NCAA!!

There are only three high schools that have gymnastics programs. There was a day when 15 did.

Gymnastics is no longer a varsity sport so its not so strange. All high schools field the same sports teams although some are just hanging on due to lack of interest. Pretty soon Kennedy and Wheaton will not have field hockey and lacrosse due to lack of interest.

I don't understand. The HSs offer all of the same sports as long as there is interest?

That's not true. Schools that fielded varsity teams this year include Blake, Gaithersburg, Springbrook, BCC, Whitman, WJ, Sherwood and Blair.

MCPS has specific varsity sports that are offered. See earlier link for the list. MCPS pays the coaches and sets the schedules for these sports. Not all schools will have enough participants for every sport. You need a whole team for field hockey and lacrosse. There are also club sports, like crew and ice hockey, but those are funded by parents and are not at all schools.
