Gymnastics in MoCo Schools?

Gymnastics is no longer a varsity sport so its not so strange. All high schools field the same sports teams although some are just hanging on due to lack of interest. Pretty soon Kennedy and Wheaton will not have field hockey and lacrosse due to lack of interest.

Gymnastics is still a varsity sport, but MCPS has been trying to drop the program for years. Boys Gymnastics in MD and VA was eliminated over ten years ago. Virginia has a much stronger high school gymnastics program than MD. Most Virginia schools have teams and it is very competitive especially in Virginia Beach and Northern Virginia. Locally, the Arlington schools have been the strongest in recent years, especially because of the popular youth programs.

I don't understand. The HSs offer all of the same sports as long as there is interest?

MCPS has specific varsity sports that are offered. See earlier link for the list. MCPS pays the coaches and sets the schedules for these sports. Not all schools will have enough participants for every sport. You need a whole team for field hockey and lacrosse. There are also club sports, like crew and ice hockey, but those are funded by parents and are not at all schools.

Lots of schools have club sports, but they are not officially recognized by the school or supported financially by the school. At least this is how MoCo operates.
