That was a 20 minute segment designed to make everyone fall back in love with Harry (successful), establish that he has not left his family and that they do not hate him (waffle maker! philip's zooming), frame Meghan as an engaged mom, frame himself as committed to service.

And all done without at all seeming like it was trying too hard.

He also, and I think this is the truth, refused to frame his leaving as having anything at all to do with Meghan. He made that choice on his own, because of how it was effecting him, and he would do it again.

People hate her because they think she manipulated him, but in the end, that is very insulting to Harry, and I feel like this was an enormous statement to all of those people, and a continued harsh indictment of the british press.

+1 He did an amazing job. He's a great public speaker who easily connected with outside audiences. Diana was the same way and look how the royal family is still desperately trying to change the narrative around her when she's been dead 30 years.

Give em hell Harry.

What hell? The BRF may or may not have protected Meghan from the press adequately or the way that Harry wanted. But other than that, what did they do or fail to do? They tried to give Harry what he wanted, gave him options, and he rejected all of them. The friendlier he acts, the better he looks. If he starts trying to give Charles or Will and Kate hell, it won't go well, let alone the Queen.

The palace is constantly responding to and complaining about H+M's work in the U.S. It wasn't even 3 hours after the Corden skit went live that 'palace sources' were complaining that Harry was overshadowing the Queen. He's trending in the U.S. and the U.K. with wall-to-wall coverage on their news for a reason - popularity.

For the British courtiers, anyone who can knock the Queen off the front page is bad news. Too bad.

Agree with this.

Even if Harry and Meghan were truly complete jerks to the BRF behind closed doors--and maybe they are, I have no idea--I can't imagine why a loving, supporting family would ALLOW all these cruel leaks about them, making them a target for the media. Especially in light of what happened to Diana. Crack down on palace leaks! Refute the gross "H&M are so terrible, poor us" narrative more strongly! What would it cost? If you love your grandson, your brother, your son, even if he and his new wife are terrible, you would at least try to protect them from all these media attacks. I know I would do everything I could to keep a strong connection to a family member that I felt was going astray. I wouldn't burn the bridges by letting these dumb stories get out, embarrassing and alienating them more.

But the BRF doesn't do this. To me, that makes it clear they are using the H&M "controversies" to distract from Prince Andrew (and to a much lesser degree, his embarrassing, grifting ex-wife Fergie).

What a headline! Manages to employ that undercurrent of racism (why on earth is the half second of bad rapping focused on, I had to think to know what it was referencing!), ding Meghan for 'revealing' something that was obviously planned in a bit so at this point they are literally criticizing her for saying his name in public! Also injects a little British superiority with the vaccine video (who on this PLANET is not paying attention to vaccines right now?!).

Honestly Harry himself made the queen look better than her courtiers have with the waffle maker anecdote (the fact he told it AND the content both spoke volumes) than they have managed to do in the last year.

Prince Harry just gave a year's worth of amazing royal headlines in one interview. I know the British press are pissed they don't get exclusives like this. The Prince rapping! Harry using the loo! Harry cursing while drinking tea! Harry on an obstacle course! Harry's thoughts on the Crown!

Ahahaha. Stay mad island of haters.

The BRF responds to "press leaks" the same way for all of them, pretty much. Silence. And it works.

They all know this, even Harry knows this. That's why his behavior has been so baffling, that's why everyone has been assuming that Meghan has been driving the bus. Still seems to be the case, tbh.

Harry humanized the Queen so easily its shocking. I really think the British courtiers have taken the whole approach to their Covid policy the wrong way. They basically hid the Queen in Windsor Castle for a year and everyone else followed suit because 'she's the lead'. Yes, they should have protected her but also sent out the young royals to more effectively support public initiatives.

Imagine had they apologized to H+M, said 'hey we need you - the half-in, half-out model will work' and set Harry out to set up food kitchens and campaign to stay home, Kate to meet with mothers around the country and support early education, Meghan to reach out to minority communities with education campaigns + mask deliveries, and William to meet with healthcare workers in his air ambulance capacity.

Whatever. Its just stupid how they shot themselves in the foot.

Do they want Harry, who is no longer a working royal, to check the queen’s itinerary before he does anything?

+1. He humanized prince Phillip also with that anecdote about how he ends zoom calls...they could have used this interview with Corden as something positive.

Both the waffle and zoom stories were hilarious and endearing. The Queen's courtiers have been f'ing this up from the beginning.

Total amateur hour. Of course people are going to be more interested in this than an almost 100 year old talking about vaccines. Elizabeth clearly learned nothing from Diana. Rank doesn’t determine popularity and/or media interest. She should have kept them close and used them for her own causes and ends (which is what Charles would have done...he got a lot of good press for walking Meghan down the aisle). But I guess that would have required at least some fake humility.

Only thing he gave up was his country. The only future is for the actual heir. The spares don’t even seem to get properties anymore. Just leases. Andrew is a spare and what future do his girls have? None of them will be working royals and will have to have a job to maintain their lifestyle. Same with all the other spares’ kids. Their future is the same as anyone else from a wealthy family. Except Harry and Meghan will likely have more money to leave their children than the previous generation of spares will.

Harry basically asked for a leave of absence from the family business and his family fired him professionally and personally. Can’t blame Meghan for that.

Not blaming Meghan. Just stating fact. Harry gave up more than Meghan has. He gave up his country and he also gave up his family. His children won't know their cousins like he and William did. And the history. He is one of a rare families and he gave it all up. Sure, spares weren't treated well but, I think once Prince Charles is king things could have been better.

Things will be worse once Charles becomes king. His plan is to streamline the monarchy to just heirs. He and Andrew have been battling about that for years and Andrew lost.

True about the cousins but not particularly unusual.

I actually think things will be better when Charles is king. Charles loves Harry and from accounts was more supportive of the half in half out model. I think when he is King Harry's military titles will likely be restored and he will be 'around' more. But that he will never go back to being a working royal. But that that distinction will be less of a bright red line in the sand than a formality.

When William becomes King I don't know, I think he has always been threatened by Harry's popularity. But by the time that happens Harry will be old and his children will be making names for themselves as Americans.

When I read or hear gratuitous— “Oh, but I just don’t like her” posts, I imagine what it must have been like for Meghan to meet her new extended family — and see Princess Michael “welcoming” her by wearing her blackamoor brooch, and to deal with Piers Morgan gleefully oozing hatred, and the racist screeds that passed for “news”. I imagine what it must have felt like to try to be a part of a powerful family that just didn’t care enough to intervene.... and it’s enough to make me genuinely care enough about Meghan and Harry to deeply wish them well. Oddly, I’m paying much more attention to the BRF than I would have if people had just quietly accepted Meghan without all the projected craziness and racism.

I'm glad Harry didn't wait around until Charles or William was King. The Duke (and Duchess) of Gloucester are prime examples of what happens to non-heirs. The Duke was 5th in line for the throne when he was born. The son of the 3rd son of the King (Queen Elizabeth's grandfather). In other words as far as the family line goes he was to Queen Elizabeth as Princess Beatrice is to Prince William.

He served the monarchy his whole life. Guess where he's living now? A barn. He's only 74. He's got 20 more years of that to look forward to.

The BRF responds to "press leaks" the same way for all of them, pretty much. Silence. And it works.

They all know this, even Harry knows this. That's why his behavior has been so baffling, that's why everyone has been assuming that Meghan has been driving the bus. Still seems to be the case, tbh.

Works how? What does it achieve?

No one else in the BRF except Meghan and Archie has had to, and will have to, deal with the racist tinged coverage. It's a qualitatively different problem.

What's more, there is a moral imperative to challenge racism. Britain is dealing with their own racism/anti-immigration problems. The BRF doesn't rule the country anymore, so if it wants to maintain legitimacy and relevance, it should model and support British values. Calling out the tabloids for their unfair and racist coverage is standing up for modern Britain and the whole of the British people. It would also be great PR in the Commonwealth nations, as well.

Meghan presented them with a great opportunity to forge a path into the future for a fusty and beleaguered institution, and they're blowing it.
