That’s assuming MLSN doesn’t also go SY. I know people used to think their silence on the topic meant they weren’t changing, but now, with GA (their partners on the girls side) switching it is pretty obvious they are going to switch things up. Whether that is full SY across the board or just at the P2P clubs, it is coming.

You dont understand that MLS Next wasnt created to be a youth league. It was created to provide MLS pro clubs with cheap local talent. In the pro world grade in school or aligning to a school year has no meaning.
Care to explain why they started MLSN2 and put teams in NAL? And why they bother with MLSN non-Academies P2P at all? Because none of them have anything to do with the pros other than trying to make money off of youth soccer, like everyone else. And we can rule out identifying talent as a reason because players can be picked for MLSN academies from any league.

Pretty simple. Bigger pool of potential players to choose from.

I'm sure multiple P2P clubs want to get involved with MLS but they dont want to run an Academy. The easy way to solve this is MLS2. It's the same thing that happens in other countries with multiple different levels of Academy clubs. The only difference here is that its a mix of Academy and P2P at different levels. Also all players are under MLS contract which means they all funnel up to MLS if theres talent.

Congrats! This is the most delusional take in the last 30 pages. You get a special badge just for this.

OK you know all apparently.

Watch when MLS takes over P2P and ECNL gets boxed put of playing professionally.

Wait wait, I thought MlSN was a strict path to pro and now you’re saying they’re going to take over P2P? Ok… will check back in on this in a few years I guess.

I don’t think ECNl cares about pro, they seem very college focused. So getting ‘boxed out’ of pro doesn’t seem like a bad thing for them.

Yes, MLS Next first goal is to provide pro players.

However just like the Euro Acadamies that college teams recruit from. Top MLS Next players that arent quite pro get recruited by college coaches. This puts ECNL and all the P2P leagues as 3rd and 4th choices.

MLSN Academy is pro path. P2P MLSN is a money scam. The level of P2P MLSN is more or less compared with ECNL. Don't try to associate yourself with MLSN Academy. You only play ONE game a year against MLSN academy and you are currently playing down. Nothing to be proud of.

Whats wrong with there being multiple levels? Its not a scam. From what I've seen coaches look all over for talent. If you're good something will happen.

Because P2P MLSN parents always want to associate themselves with MLSN Academy as a whole in MLSN and look down on ECNL. But in reality, they are more or less compared to ECNL. It just like you have a remote relative who happens to be rich, so you pretend you are rich too. Ex, our RL players go to the neighboring P2P MLSN team and player from that P2P MLSN is a bench in our NL team.

This is why I said earlier that MLS will slowly take over P2P clubs now that MLS2 is available. Clubs want to be associated with MLS but they also want P2P $$$. You're swimming upstream if you dont think it will happen.

Which is exactly why they are going to switch to SY.

If you believe that fine.

Been right every time in this and the previous thread. MLSN will come out with info in a bit. Unlike the other leagues they will also be making some changes/exceptions for the spring.

Don’t worry, it changes nothing as far as their path to pro goes.

Bingo. I know an mls coach (pro team) and he told me they were in talks of closing the academy because it’s a money pit and they aren’t seeing any ROI (creating pros). He mentioned the very few kids that do break through only play because injuries. Also noted that the lack of development between 18-22 is a huge problem here.

Nonsense, if you dont develop players yourself you'll need to buy them on the open market competing with other clubs. The cost is the same either way if MLS is looking to field top tier talent. If MLS doesnt want to field top tier talent and you think MLS Next doesnt develop the best players its still cheaper because they have a pool of players to pull from that doesnt cost anything.

Because you don’t agree doesn’t make it untrue. Big market team viewed it as a money pit, that’s a fact. It’s not that they don’t have money to lose, the programs just don’t produce at the level you’re making it seem.

Funny that a few months after talking to the coach, mlsn 2 is created.

So you heard a rumor 2nd hand from another parent and that is somehow true? Give me a break.

The only thing holding MLS back is that its structured like NFL where each club is owned by the league. If this wasnt the case Soccer would be huge in America. Imagine if every club playing in MLS lived and died by winning or losing. Imagine if they had to do all their own marketing. Imagine if there was no such thing as a salary cap.

Numbnuts, take a deep breath and process this information.

This came from a current mls coach, major market, top academy. Mlsn has failed to develop worthwhile pros. This lead to the creation of mlsn2 to pass the bill to parents.

You are right that the designed parity puts a ceiling on the league. But what kills the mls isn’t the nfl structure, it’s the nfls existence and all of the other major sports. Soccer gets the leftovers

I don't know why everyone is shitting on this guy. I felt it was something everyone knew that MLS Academies were not profitable at all and actually just expense lines for MLS clubs. They have them because they are required to, because they are good for community engagement which is good for the club and the brand and people buying tickets etc. Not that academies aren't selective, they defintiely are, but they are not profitable and no one is an MLS academy thinks that any of the local kids they picked up at 11 are ever going to play on their first team. I'm sure there are < 10 kids nationally for whom thats not true, but MLS teams themselves mostly pick up their players internationally, or from super draft out of college or off of their second teams, USL teams, etc.

Its a bunch of girl dads who think they know everything because their daughter played in ECNL.

Somebody complained the other day of this forum taken up by MLSNext related comments.

However it's obvious that ECNL will be impacted in some way by MLSNext's decisions. ECNL and MLSNext are competitors for talent and money.

Also other leagues, for instance in my state this year so many teams have moved from USCS NPL to MLSNext Academy division and ECNL-R.

Now, for next years there is a project of ECNL being expanded dramatically. What MLSNext decides will impact the rest of the leagues.

It will be interesting to see how the youth soccer landscape will be in two or three years.

For boys its pretty clear that they choose MLS Next over other leagues.

Now that MLS is moving more into the p2p world with MLSN2.ECNL hats are starting to sweat because they can see the writing on the wall.

Be ready NWSL in talks with GA on a potential merger. Don’t know all the details but I’m told this could pull some top ECNL girls clubs over to the GA over next few years.

Aug-Dec birthdays will have ECNL and the rest of the market share that MLSN won’t be able to service. Pushing for SY knowing MLSN would stay BY was a great chess move on their part

What will happen is MLS will keep getting bigger and once they have p2p they will ignore ECNL. If ECNL wants to play MLSN2 teams they'll need to play up.

You are dreaming, and I am an MLSN dad. There will always be space in the marketplace for multiple competitive leagues, especially with 2 different age groups. The bigger MLSN gets the more watered down and it will lose its essence (mainly scamming the parents)

CURRENT ECNL TEAM

14 Q1/Q2 (9 starters)
4 Q3/Q4 (2 starters)

NEXT YEAR ECNL TEAM

4 Drop down from team above
2 Top RL youngers from team above
8 Current team olders
1 Current team younger stays up (USYNT ID Regional)
3 girls from different team transferring in

So I am anticipating ~50% turnover on a team where a normal year would be closer to 10-20%

If you are a Q1/Q2 non starter then better start looking at a different club where you might fit a need or get comfortable with RL

20% turnover per year? Seems more like a youngers team or an olders team thats not winning.
