5th Grade CogAT : Number Correct

So a lot of seats will probably open as people decide to take the "bird in the hand" over the uncertaintly of the lottery.

That must have changed since last year. DC got into one program and was waitlisted at the other. The invite was accepted by the deadline in early February and then DC was also invited to the other program in mid-March off the waitlist.

I was honestly surprised as well, but there was no reason for this person to tell an untruth. My child is much happier with the program he was accepted to over the one to which he was waitlisted. I only asked on behalf of some of his friends parents who had wondered out loud about the same question

That seems wrong. I believe he said it but I don't think it's good policy or fair to the students.
Are you sure he didn't misunderstand and think you were talking about 2 acceptances?

Me too. We accepted at 1 school and then got in off the waitlist at the other. I really doubt MCPS has changed policies to force you to pick the first school that accepts you. They would say that in written materials if so.

I think it's highly ridiculous that we are all participating in this conjecture, but I continue to, so whatever.

I found a study stating that students most likely to succeed in academic gifted programs will have consistently high scores in Q and V, and the N scores have less of an impact. Seems to be a pretty standard best practice for selection. So if your child has a high composite but with markedly higher Q and V scores, that seems to be the biggest CogAT indicator for selection according to experts.

This is really interesting to me. My child got into one of the STEM magnets, and honestly, I was surprised. She consistently scores in the 99% in math, and scores reasonably well on verbal tests (mid 90s). Her non-verbal scores are considerably lower though. 8C profile overall.

No, I was clear and I felt like I had "nothing to lose" in asking since my we accepted the day the letters came out. Some of my son's friends were genuinely unsure of what to do, and their parents didn't want to seem impolite or ungrateful by asking. I suppose you can guess that there is a cultural issue at play here.

I genuinely apologize if this is misinformation, but just wanted to share as the source seemed reliable even if the information was surprising.

Yes, I’m certain PP misunderstood.

I’m sure it’s wrong. Call MCPS.

For those who went in past years, roughly how many parents would you say attended the open houses?

Last year it was standing room only at Clemente.

If MCPS did a better job for all kids, people might not be losing their minds over envelopes. The County goes through the process of identifying kids as gifted at multiple points (and I think they're a little too generous with that label), but then has limited ability to actually provide enrichment. 100 spots for STEM enrichment is a joke. All kids could benefit from enriched science classes, not just the 99.9% who won this bizarre mcps lottery.

Those scores are high! It's hard to believe they aren't high enough to get a spot, or at least waitlisted!

If those scores are accurate something else is going on. My kid got spots at both magnets with lower scores, also in bound for TPMS. MCPS says it’s not any one factor so I’d guess there are differences in:

- MAP scores
- grades
- age (PP’s kid is likely red shirted or one of the older kids)

It's likely the elementary school. The child who got in is likely one of the top 1-2 students in Cogat. The child who did not just happens to have 2-3 kids who scored better.

It’s the same school.

Wait. So you're on an anonymous board talking to someone else on an anonymous board and you happen to know that you're both at the same elementary school?
