Cohen’s original story had him falling in a sword for Trump:

I did this all on my own. Trump knew nothing.

Trump stick with this telling of the tale on AF1 when asked by AP.

Rudy and Trump invented a new story. Trump backed the new story. Cohen, whose legal fees are being paid in part by the Trump Campaign, said it was incorrect.

Trump says Rudy has his facts wrong and is still learning on the job.

This morning Rudy had another interview with a little more elaboration added for effect...

In a telephone interview with NBC News, Giuliani insisted he only shared details of the payment with Trump about a week ago.

“I don't think the president realized he paid him (Cohen) back for that specific thing until we (his legal team) made him aware of the paperwork,” he said.

Giuliani said the president responded, "‘Oh my goodness, I guess that's what it was for.’”

Rudy also claimed:

Giuliani says the president was subsequently on board with the decision to go public with the reimbursement. "You're not going to see daylight between the president and me," he said. "We're going to work hard to have a consistent strategy."

I wonder if it would be better for Trump to show that he had previously paid off women numerous times to protect his relation with Melannia. That way he could say the payment to Stormy Daniels was routine business for him and had nothing to do with the election.
