You have at least a month (maybe it's 3?) to claim COBRA, and before you renounce that claim or the clock runs out your coverage continues.

Wouldn't COBRA only be if her parents were unemployed/laid off by their employer? Or can she claim the COBRA they WOULD HAVE received had they been laid off or something?

It is 90 days to claim COBRA, but just wondering if COBRA would even be offered to her in this situation. Though maybe it would be -- bc she is suddenly w/o insurance thru loss of a parent, no different than when a family is w/o insurance when there's a layoff.

Death of the covered employee is a qualifying life event that triggers COBRA.

I asked my co-worker this question and she suggested that maybe the car insurance will cover some of the medical bills. But how does the car insurance work? Does it lapse tomorrow because the policy holder is deceased? Or will they fight the other driver's insurance?

Sad thought but does the girl even know what happened to her family yet?

One very odd question...when someone is taken to the hospital unconscious, how are loved ones found? In the example of this poor child that lived, how do they track down her extended family to come care for her? So heartbreaking.

My teenage cousin in another state was in a head on collision where a truck drove right over her in the drivers seat following the collision. Jaws of life were used and she was taken out by helicopter to the trauma center.

Her car was completely mangled to say the least. She happened to have just picked up her paycheck and one of the officers found that and used the name and company to track her down (contacted the restaurant manager who helped the police get in touch with her family.

Her purse, drivers license, etc were not easily accessible in the mess of her car and I guess they thought it was faster than using the plates? This was a small town where most people know each other.

Maryland is a no fault state, so we might never know. The police aren't going to the press with the forensics now or later. BTW, they already have everything - witness statements, engine recorder info, spoke with survivors.

Other people have corrected you but I know for an absolute fact that this is untrue. I had a family member pass away in a traffic accident in Montgomery County and they did a full analysis that took months. It was agonizing waiting for the results. But they are absolutely very thorough.

The ignorance and obsessive questioning about insurance here is astounding.

Bumping the change.org petition to get a light installed.

Bumping the petition again for those who haven't seen it.

I'm literally hitting my head against the wall. First of all, her family is a family of doctors - don't you think ONE of them has notified the insurance company of the event? Second, don't you think ONE of them will think to pay the next premium? Third, there is usually a 30 day grace period by law. Last, it's really nobody's business.

Between this and the person in the political thread who intended to vote in BOTH the democratic and republican primaries, and had NO CLUE that wasn't allowed.....

Why? It's a legit issue. It's not like we're ONLY commenting on money -- I have expressed more than once sorrow for this poor girl.

It's a tragedy either way

Who's name is ruined?

The 20 yo BMW driver. I find it interesting and baffling that his bad driving record is being dug up while it was the 52 year old dad who made that bad left turn. Why isn't the dad's driving record not being trashed? Because he was a dad to W kids or what? He didn't yield properly and caused injuries to the BMW driver!! Would people have felt more sympathy had the BMW driver also died? He might have a bad driving record but that's prior bad acts that doesn't tell you for a fact what happened here. Even if he had been speeding, the Volt made the left turn!!!!

No 20 year old kid - and especially one with a bad driving record - should be out driving a fast BMW. Even if he was going 20 mph he's not going to win in the public's opinion as it looks like he was lavishly spoiled and acting like an idiot driving a pricey fast car in an irresponsible manner.
If his parents downgraded him to an old Subaru Outback until he could be more responsible maybe he'd be more of a sympathetic figure. But a reckless 20 year old in a bmw? Nope.

But why? He could have caused the same damage at the same speed with an Outback. So why does it matter that he's rich (or his parents are) and caused the damage with a BMW?

It doesn't matter and it could very well not be his fault, but instead be the fault of the other driver.
These are just things that the vast majority of people will be thinking, right or wrong.

However, a Subaru Outback (just an example obviously. In our family it's a grandpa car) doesn't have a huge acceleration.

Back to the traffic light, why not consider a light like the one in front of Tilden Middle School on Old Georgetown Road. The majority of the time, it just blinks yellow. But during school drop off and pick up, it is a usable light to allow cars to easily get into and out of the school. Unfortunately, it wouldn't have helped here since this happened at night...

Because my guess, is that a bunch of you are thinking the 'evil insurance company will screw her because....greed'

It's not YOUR issue. She has close family in-state. It's theirs. If you are concerned about money, donate to the fund.
