My teenage cousin in another state was in a head on collision where a truck drove right over her in the drivers seat following the collision. Jaws of life were used and she was taken out by helicopter to the trauma center.

Her car was completely mangled to say the least. She happened to have just picked up her paycheck and one of the officers found that and used the name and company to track her down (contacted the restaurant manager who helped the police get in touch with her family.

Her purse, drivers license, etc were not easily accessible in the mess of her car and I guess they thought it was faster than using the plates? This was a small town where most people know each other.
