APS School Board Chair Drama

Good grief. MK is the only SB member I’ve talked to who actually seemed sincere.

Wait, what??? Why???

I was there. They said she's violated policy, not respected swim lanes and disrespected staff.

They seem to think that School Board members aren't elected officials, who are specifically supposed to bring their opinions and positions to the role. With something like the Kaiser debacle, do they really think it's inappropriate to say "yeah, whoever was in charge of this screwed it up, and voters and their elected officials have a right to expect better"?

The real issue is that DP and CDT represent a school of thought that everyone is on the same team, and their goal should be to handle everything "in house" with as little criticism as possible. Then everyone can get together and sing a happy song about what a good job they've all done.

I can think of no better example of this than when they put the superintendent on the dais with the rest of the board. The superintendent is an employee of the board, and literally everything that the staff brings forward should, on some level, be viewed as an expression of the superintendent's performance. He is the only one the SB can hire or fire, and it's his job to make things work in alignment with the board's priorities. Instead he's up there with them acting like he's one of the gang rather than down with the staff acting like the person coordinating everything.

Anyone who comes in with the sense that APS isn't already perfect, or on autopilot on the way to becoming perfect, is going to get attacked for "criticizing staff" (every APS initiative starts with staff work, so if you criticize almost anything you can call it criticizing staff) or "failing to seek consensus" (IOW, failing to agree with the in-crowd). The SB should be a responsive institution that reflects the will of its voters, not an insular club that shields the rest of APS from accountability.

Wow. That makes a alot of sense. Even Bethany sounded like she was holding her nose while voting for her. Miranda was the only one who said something sincerely positive and Mary is easily the best SB member.

Mary really is the best and school staff appreciate her.

Rounding this discussion out, when the AEM thread was started re: the Mary coup-de-etat, both staff, parents and the community were supportive of her.

Cristina and David lost a lot of respect from the community last night. Farewell to them. Wonder where Dr Duran falls on all of this.

Not respected swim lanes???
At first I thought this meant literally not following swim lanes at the pools. I guess it means she didn't follow CDT's direction and align with her positions 100%?

Superintendent has been on the dias for years, yes? Murphy was up there, wasn't he?

There was little for DCT and DP to lose. Many in the community already lacked respect for them. They have both been a waste and have wasted years of leadership that could have been done well and effectively by more qualified people.

I don't understand either. Every SB member is on the Dias. Even in other school divisions. They are there to answer questions, give updates and introduce staff to talk about initiatives going on within the school division.

I meant superintendent. Every superintendent is on the Dias.

The criticizing staff bit is pretty amusing to me. Most APS problems seem to originate with staff – and I don’t mean teachers or in-school administrators. I don’t often have reason to interact with central office folks, but when I do, it is always a painful experience. Every single time.

+1 They lost any remaining goodwill after those petty comments last night. Sounds like their beef is Mary publicly disagrees with them. So they took revenge by publicly trashing her. Bethany sank further last night too IMO.

Swim lanes? Governance 101. Sounds like she micro-manages staff.

Moral of the story: You are only a good sb member if you adhere to what the majority of the dias wants, and you can never, ever criticize them in public.

Sounds like Trumpism to me, but what do I know. Are we sure we elected 5 Democrats?

There's a lot of APE gaslighting on this thread!

That’s not APE. CDT and DP practically said these sentiments at the SB meeting last night!

Yes, this thread, like all threads on this site has gone to the APEs. No one else would call the APS school board Trumpian. It's APE gaslighting.
