There are a lot real life inspiration in Good Will Hunting and not just the janitor at Harvard link. I think Matt also mentioned some of inspirations from his parents.
Also the two fights (the one in the basketball court and the other in the bar) were probably based on their real life competition encounter in Hollywood in the early 90s, not verbatim, but rewritten into the film's story line.
Incidentally Affleck's father was actually meant to do great things, as he very likely was the only protege to American writer William Faulkner who won a Nobel Prize for Literature in the 1950s. Shame he squandered all that away by drinking.

I agree and in his 20s and 30s I just thought he was an enormous asswipe. But I liked Argo and The Accountant a LOT and that has sort of turned it around a bit for me, I forgive him his asswipery.

I am from his area and know people who grew up with him. He is just a regular frat-bro with some intellect and looks who got lucky. He is in over his head with J LO.

I would love to be a fly on the wall of Matt Damon's house when he's talking with his wife about Ben. What do they say? What does SHE say about Matt continuing to be friends with Ben? How hard is it for Matt to stay friends with Ben when he does stupid things (like his huge back tattoo)?

You would ditch a friend over a tattoo you didn't like or over getting divorced? My friends all go through various difficult times in life. I support them, not ditch them. And their tattoos don't even register as events for me.
