BOE election candidates 2024

DCUm - have you filed?

I'm sure some have considered it, but

1) Lots of headache-inducing BOE drudge work that doesn't get discussed here, when the interest tends to be focused on a few issues

2) Slog of campaigning to try to garner over 200k votes, especially if a relative unknown who is not kow-towing to the Apple ballot, and that's not even considering the prospect of all the social-media bashing and hate-mail equivalent generated by whatever platform you do run on

3) Likelihood of total distraction in the coming two+ years from the debacle now facing the system

4) Understanding of the constraints of what might be accomplished related to any issue actually of interest from the hole from decades-long underfunding

5) Measly compensation and no real support staff

6) Candidates currently declared not seeming to be such terrible options, or the more undesired incumbents not being up for election until next cycle

Evans is out unless she files.

Evans is out even if she files. She has done nothing during her time on the board but rubber-stamp admin.

Evans only wins if a third, generally unelectable candidate (parents coalition-type), files for the seat and somehow takes enough away from Stewart so that the primary winds up squeezing Stewart out of the top 2 (Evans has enough die hard support from her base that she'd almost certainly be top 2). Evans then wins the general election because the county leans left so much and any center typically prefers that kind of stink to the other.

If it's Evans-Stewart, Stewart should win by a mile, with her not bearing a conservative standard that would turn off much of the county electorate, along with Evans' combination of the baggage of her poor oversight alienating non-die hards and the general stain on incumbents from the current debacle overcoming any potential Apple ballot designation, if she even retains that.

Unless there's some ghoul in Stewart's closet.

The other District 2 candidates are Rebecca Smondrowski and Aby Thioye.

This means that at least the At-Large and District 2 races will appear on the May primary ballot.

Still waiting to see if the District 4 race attracts additional candidates before tonight's deadline.

This dude?:
Moco360-
Mui is a member of Rockville’s Human Services Advisory Commission, and was appointed in 2022, according to the City of Rockville. He works as a management consultant at Accenture consulting firm and has lived in Rockville since Oct. 2020, he wrote in an email to MoCo360. In addition, he is a 12-year U.S. Navy veteran and was a naval officer for 10 of those years, according to his campaign website.

He sounds like someone who knows what a board should do. I hope we can also get someone good in District 2 so we’re not stuck with choosing between an incumbent and a pseudo-incumbent.

I thought that logic would have applied to Wolff a couple years ago but she was comfortably re-elected. Don't underestimate the incumbant advantage. Sure is strange that Evans didn't file yet.

Bethany Mandel is running.

Yes. THAT Bethany Mandel. https://www.bethany4boe.com/

For the uninitiated, Bethany is a homeschool mom with no direct experience with MCPS. She speaks at Moms for Liberty events and tries to promote the idea that public school is liberal indoctrination.

She also has two blatant conflicts of interest. She is currently suing MCPS over what she claims is a violation of open meetings rules. Her legal team works for Stephen Miller’s organization. https://montgomeryperspective.com/2023/11/14/national-right-wing-group-sues-mcps/

She is also the editor for a series of children’s books and she has publicly complained that MCPS doesn’t put the books in media centers. https://nypost.com/2022/11/19/maryland-school-district-with-lgbtq-book-list-rejected-books-promoting-american-values/

Oh geez. No wonder why then we get stuck with folks like Wolff or Evans.

Ugh. Is she a resident of district 4, which is Silver Spring and Takoma Park, roughly the same boundaries as the DCC?

Mandel is an extremist but if Evans runs then Mandel has a good chance of spoiling Stewart’s chances of being in the top two.

BEWARE - Mandel is a Moms of Liberty candidate. Moms of Liberty is an anti LGBTQ, racist organization out to dismantle public schools. Moms of Liberty is also a coordinated effort that gets a lot of far-right funding. Very dangerous.

She has no chance of winning. It’s not worth spinning your wheels about. Far more moderate candidates than Mandel have lost big because they were labeled too extreme. Mandel is on the fringe of the fringe.
