That is some awful writing, I can't tell if it's a story or an opinion piece, so far the only concrete scholarship opportunity anyone has pointed to is a full ride at Liberty.

Anyone who participated who wasn’t a finalist was eligible to apply for the 800 special corporate scholarships if they met the other criteria (child of employee, etc). They knew the timing of the scholarships when they registered.

No scholarships were lost.

There certainly needs to be regime change at FCPS and on the School Board. Not sure this particular issue will get the Republicans there, although the Democrats seem to be trying to help them by claiming that kids in the top 2-3% of PSAT test takers (but not top 1%) are low-achievers begging for a “participation trophy.”

Most of the URMs the Democrats pretend to care about so much would be over the moon if their kids were commended students in the top 3%.

Stop lying, please.

Based on the selection index score set by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), two-thirds (34,000) of the 50,000 high scorers receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their academic performance. Despite gaining high scores, being considered as a commended student means they are no longer qualified for the National Merit Scholarships. However, they can still receive PSAT scholarships from private corporations and businesses.

Just like the semi-finalists and non-commended kids.

I think the coalition for TJ needs to keep up their attacks. Of course I'm a democrat and enjoy watching them alienate the rest of county

I just popped in to say I have issue with the comment on the first page proclaiming a clerical error. It was not a clerical error, in any of the FCPS schools. Although, throwing the school clerical staff under the bus is favorite pastime for some.

I'm not a Republican, but I was alienated by how many Democrats responded to this situation by suggesting that being recognized as among the top 3% of PSAT test-takers was a non-event akin to a "participation trophy" for kids who weren't Semifinalists (in the top 1%). For a party that often goes after "1%-ers," this seemed awfully crude and disrespectful.

Of course I'm a former commended student, as was one of my kids, so apparently we don't really belong in the same room with the TJAAG types.

You think that they need their own ceremony for this? It wasn't well-attended in the past if that gives you any idea of the student interest.

Seriously. The mom wrote in an email that the award was a big deal and then we see the school received 250 of them!?!?

So many RWNJs on this thread. I'm not sure whether to be concerned or amused.

When I got the commendation as a kid, they did nothing. It wasn't a big deal.

The rest of FCPS burns while C4TJ fiddles.

No, I don't think there needs to be a "ceremony." Just let the commended kids know on a timely basis and maybe take a picture for the yearbook.

Or at least one prolific RWNJ.

GFY. The Democrats would absolutely crap in their pants if eligible Black kids somehow hadn't been made aware of the National Achievement Scholarship Program when that program was in effect.
