I assume HRW and UN Women and all those supposed human rights organizations are still silent on the matter of Israeli women being sexually tortured by Hamas, but my standards for them are so low now that it’s not a surprise.

Israel had never sent UN Women the notification needed for them to open an investigation. Which makes the complaints just another bad faith accusation.

This is surely a comment motivated by the best, purest faith.

It is. The lack of response from UN Women, which has a whole program specifically focused on the horrors of sexual violence in war, was very disturbing. That is until it turned out that Israel never took the basic steps to trigger an investigation and their hands were tied. The propaganda war against the UN by Israel is bad for the world. That they have undertaken, at least part of, it in bad faith is a shame.

To be clear, I am talking about the Government of Israel and not the regular people that amplify these messages. While we wouldn't know about the bureaucratic procedures of obscure UN agencies the Israeli Mission to the UN would.

UN Women regularly issues tweets, statements, etc. condemning sexual violence against women worldwide without the targets having triggered or requested an investigation. You of course know this. But in this case, the organization has been silent, and we all know why. You are just defending overt antisemitism from a corrupt organization.

I’m not Jewish or remotely tied to Israel and am critical of many aspects of the Israeli response, but I also think that the silence from the UN Women is inexcusable. I’ve certainly lost any faith I used to have in the UN. Their silence in the face of the sexual torture faced by the 10/7 victims is appalling, full stop.

No. That's not true. I actually know the people there.

Perhaps you should convince them to join an organization that retains a sense of morality, then, since the one they are currently a part of has lost whatever minimal decency it used to have.

Lol, such bad faith. All Israel had to do was tell them and they would have started an investigation. It really is that simple.

Lol and they did on October 30th, you effing jackass https://www.ncjw.org/news/ncjw-israel-womens-network-and-140-womens-organizations-call-for-urgent-action-response-to-un-womens-statement-of-october-13/

As if UN Women would pay any attention to this.

UN Women does not care that Jewish women had nails driven into their vaginas. The victims were Jewish so the organization probably celebrated the torture more than anything.

Well, the head of the UNWomen is Jordanian.

As reported by The New York Times, at the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, said he sent two letters about the use of rape by Hamas militants, appended with photographs of victims’ bodies, to Bahous. He said: "I got no response whatsoever. Not even, ‘We received your letter.

Right. The UN Women organization is obviously quite fine with sexual torture used against Jewish women. We can all see that.

You do realize this is happening every day in Gaza? Men and boys are routinely rounded up, stripped naked, humiliated, beaten, and subjected to torture to make them "confess" to being in Hamas. People are regularly burned alive in Gaza, and there are also many surviving burn victims. Unlike in Israel, the hospitals are too often ill-equipped to treat them. As you probably know, those burned on 10/7, both Palestinian fighters and Israelis, were almost certainly burned by the IDF. People in Gaza are having surgery without anesthetics. And if you really want to contemplate horrible ways to die, imagine being one of the thousands of people buried under the rubble and slowly dying of thirst or from your untreated injuries. Another unpleasant but common death in Gaza is to be shot by an IDF sniper and to then lie in agony for hours while the IDF shoots anyone who tries to approach and help you. As one example of many, one of the woman shot inside the Holy Family parish was shot as she tried to carry the other to safety. They were a mother and daughter. Here's a video of a young Israeli soldier who brags that he's looking for babies to kill: https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20231228-israeli-soldier-says-he-possibly-killed-a-12-year-old-girl/

If the source was Middle East Monitor, that is an Islamist organization with ties to Hamas and Muslim Brotherhood, not a legitimate news organization.

The sexual abuse of women on 10/7 or on any other day is horrific and disgusting. I'm sure everyone here wishes none of that ever happened.

It's sad that the initial reports were met with guarded skepticism, but consider that we were also told that 40 babies were beheaded, a baby was baked in an oven, and dead babies were found hanging on a clothesline. These stories proved to be untrue. The more lurid and preposterous the claim, the less likely it was to be true, even though some assertions were allegedly based on "eyewitness testimonies" (which were later retracted). We also heard that Palestinian militants had burned many people alive. It turned out, and Israelis who observed the events of the day confirmed this, that in fact the IDF had done most, if not all, of the burning, including burning hundreds of Palestinian militants to death (as has been pointed out, they "did not burn themselves").

Unfortunately, Israel is currently led by some ethically challenged people. To put it bluntly, they lie. A lot. Given Israel's lack of credibility, it would be naive to unquestioningly accept any of its assertions. Israel's moral challenges also make it difficult to believe so-called confessions of rape by captured militants. Israel beats "confessions" out of its detainees, so these "admissions" cannot be assumed to be valid in every case.

Additionally, there is no available forensic evidence of rape. In a Times of Israel report, it is claimed that "physical evidence of sexual assault was not collected from corpses by Israel’s overtaxed morgue facilities." Additionally, "the government has not released explicit footage or pressed rape survivors to share their stories. Nor have the forensic services released formal reports on whether their findings were consistent with sexual abuse."

I think it likely that, sadly, women were raped on 10/7. I think it equally likely that some of the rape stories we have been told are fabricated. It would be entirely out of character for Israel not to lie about rape, given that it has lied about virtually everything else and is particularly prone to lying about being victimized.

If you can bring yourself to stop calling terrorists "militants" you might have a better chance of establishing credibility.

So you believe collective punishment is warranted then. That"s a horrifying position.

serious question - is this your first time contemplating the horrors of war? did you grow up without access to history books, novels, movies, other people, or any other sources or information

Does "Never Again" only apply to Jewish people? I grew up thinking it meant that as a global community, we would never allow a Shoah to happen to any group. But it seems like shrugging off innocent civilians deaths in this conflict is really easy for you. I don't understand why.

DP.

I don’t understand why there’s so much more emphasis on civilian deaths in this conflict than in prior conflicts.

Assume roughly 15k civilian deaths in Gaza.

Compare to other/prior conflicts both as an absolute number and as a combatant/civilian ratio.

It’s interesting.

I guess the expectation is that because it's 2023, and because we know the U.S. armaments in this conflict are state-of-the-art, the precision of the war would be much more efficient than, say, the Civil War or WWI or WWII, etc. So it's difficult to understand how there's a fair comparison there.

A good guess, but the fact is that in 2022, the UN estimated that civilians constituted 90% of casualties in recent conflicts.

https://press.un.org/en/2022/sc14904.doc.htm

So there are really two possibilities here:

1. People’s expectations of the grim realities of conflict have suddenly and inexplicably become skewed.

2. People are reacting differently because this conflict involves Israel.

I’d say that #2 is the more plausible explanation.

Ok. So if you are ok with civilians dying why are the civilian deaths on 10:7 so horrible to you? From a Palestinian perspective they are all a part of a war that stretches back to the 1940s. Hostages included.

Personally, I think it’s horrific. And I thin kIsraeli’s actions are equally horrific. Bit of you are saying civilian deaths in a war are a-ok, then please explain why 10/7 is so very different. And please keep in mind that for every Israeli death since 1948, there has been at least 10x Palestinian deaths.

Israeli media doesn’t cover the suffering of the Palestinians, news coverage is all about them. Very rarely does Palestinian or West Bank suffering even make the news.
Perhaps news stories about them will not sell. Media outlets here are also biased, but at least we have exposure worldwide and can compare how the news is different in other media outlets

That aside, even the DC based Israel supporters seem blind to the suffering and keep regurgitating the same arguments

And how exactly does Palestinian media cover Israeli suffering?

Crickets…

FFS. You win dumbest argument of the day in DCUM.

Yeah, this x 1000.

Wonder why your “Israeli soldier” is speaking English with an Arabic accent?

If the source was Middle East Monitor, that is an Islamist organization with ties to Hamas and Muslim Brotherhood, not a legitimate news organization.

I wanted to debunk all her other “points” but then realized that she probably failed 6th grade digital literacy class and just let it go. The only thing that is Israeli or soldier about that guy is the color of his shirt, and anyone in a green shirt must be an Israeli soldier.

Sorry to disappoint you, but my lowest grade on any test in middle school was 97%. Your ad hominems say more about you than about me. I hesitated to include the clip of the Israeli soldier as I cannot validate its authenticity one way or the other. Unfortunately, there will be young men on all sides who behave like this during war. War atrocities are inevitable. However, I presume you are as moved by the suffering of Palestinians that I described (which [i]is[/is] verifiable) as you are by suffering of Israelis?

They need their friends and social media to explain to them things anyone with a a working moral compass and basic common sense can understand.

No amount of oppression warrants the sheer brutality and bloodlust that these disgusting animals exhibited on October 7th.

They are, for all their religious extremism, godless, evil pigs. It’s one thing to kill, even to attack and instigate a war, but their behavior (and unbelievably , the support that they’ve received from dangerously ignorant and gullible sheep) is depraved .

I would much rather be a casualty of war in the wrong place at the wrong time by a quick gunshot or bomb , than to be humiliated, gang raped, tortured and burned alive, in front of my children and then have the whole shebang videotaped on a phone call to my mother.
And they can thank their dear leaders for turning them into the martyrs that they call themselves.

If you don’t see the depravity in this, all you apologists, and whatabout-ism-ists, then you are ducking morons.

Love how you called terrorists “Palestinian fighters”. True colors!

Frankly, I don't see much difference between "Palestinian fighters," "Israeli fighters," and terrorists. They all commit atrocities.

Really?

I think that makes you morally depraved.

Let me guess: you’re a defund the police nutter as well, right?

You guessed wrong I find it morally depraved that anyone would doubt that Israel is committing atrocities in Gaza. The main difference I see between the two sides is that my country is assisting one of them with my taxes.

You are entitled to that view, but would you care to address my comments about Israel's credibility?
