It was stolen car that was speeding had been reported stolen days earlier.

Source?

Also curious about a source. I've been trying to find more information about what happened and none of the news reports I've seen have any details. Are there any official accounts of what happened beyond what DC Police and EMS shared yesterday in the immediate aftermath?

sadly, I think that because nobody died, we won't get any more information about this than we already have. three people having critical (likely life-altering) injuries just doesn't register.

We never even got any more information about the crash at the Parthenon restaurant on Connecticut last year, where 2 people did die.

Elderly driver lost control of vehicle.

Ok, and? What was the name of the driver? Did the police charge the driver with anything, after the driver killed 2 people?

If you contact the police they will provide you will a copy of the accident report. I am not sure why you think having the name of the elderly driver is that important to you unless your plan is to harass them.

Was the driver charged? If so, what was the driver charged with? If not, why was the driver not charged? This is a driver who failed to control their vehicle, crashed onto a sidewalk, and killed 2 people.

NBC4 report led that the police are investigating the cause but suspect it was related to confusion from legacy reversible lane markings.

I read that and it seemed to be sheer speculation. Is there anyone who can provide actual facts? Rumors floating around the neighborhood include a stolen car was involved, one of the cars made an illegal u-turn, one of the victims was DOA...It would be helpful to know the facts to have a better understanding of what happened.

What happened?

First, there were dinosaurs, but they died and turned into oil.

the oil was used to power cars on a neighborhood boulevard designed like a highways.

People were injured and property was damaged.

Pretty simple.

That sounds extremely plausible, based on the number of stolen cars and the number of people doing stupid u-turns. Driver does a stupid U-turn, gets t-boned by speeding stolen car, smashes into 2 other cars.

Yes, we can all speculate, based on no actual facts.

+100. And then use our speculation to fit whatever narrative we favor.

It is not speculation. It is the preliminary areas of inquiry that the police are investigating based on the facts they currently have at their disposal.

On the other hand, it's totally normal to drive your $50,000 extended-cab F150 pick-up truck to the Giant a half mile away to buy a gallon of milk, but it's nothing to brag about.

It is totally normal to efficiently use the transportation that is available to you. It would be totally abnormal to go out and buy a $6000 bicycle just to make that one trip when you already have a vehicle.

If you think the dentists riding in lycra on the weekend aiming for their Strava KOMs on their $6,000 durace cannondales is who the city is building bike lanes for, you are a loon. Those guys never ride on Conn Ave and never will. And they'd also never be caught in a bike lane in the first place since they are moving at the car speed.

The bike lanes are for commuter and local cyclists. For kids, for people on bike shares, for people who are not comfortable riding in traffic.

Okay, and? There are probably a handful of these in the city because they are massively expensive. The lanes are frigging CapBi commuters. Those things that are grey and red and have multiple spots all along conn ave where they are docked that you might see as you speed by in your car if you look up from your cell phone.

The speed limit is already 25 MPH and there are cameras. What else do you suggest?

Road diet
Bollards for crosswalks
Additional speed cameras

What we don't suggest is doing absolutely nothing, which is what opponents to Conn Ave bike lanes and other traffic calming measures desire.

Your reaction is emotional, not logical. I hate these accidents too. But the bike lanes and “road diet” on the major north-south evacuation route will cost more lives than it saves. It will increase police/fire response time and push more cars into the neighborhoods. The unintended consequences are both unknown and far reaching. What you suggest for this road is the panicked equivalent of closing the schools for 1.5 years. It will hurt working people the most while the rich are unaffected working from home.

PP is suggesting countermeasures that are in the Federal Highway Administration design guidelines.

I’m pretty the first countermeasure in the playbook is actual traffic enforcement. Which progressives have blown straight past. Just like they don’t want to enforce any laws. So of course they go for the most expensive and heavy handed solution first. Typical.

LOL, enforcement. You want to live in a police state, when some simple changes will make the street safer.

Probably wants enforcement because they live in MD and just get a good laugh at the three DC speeding tickets that come in their mail a week as they throw them in the trash.
