| I need some direction and I've decided to make a strong effort to take 2 classes a week at my gym. Yoga or Pilates? I used to have a regular yoga practice several years ago and while I don't think I'll have the same experience at my gym yoga as I had a a yoga studio, I think I'll still enjoy the workout. I'm less familiar with pilates. Which would you pick? |
| I enjoy Pilates more - it's more athletic. Yoga was always just a little to airy-fairy for me. Stop nattering on at me about breathing, you know? |
| Really? No one else prefers one to the other? Should I do a different class instead - body pump or athletic interval or something similar? |
| I much prefer yoga, but I do hardcore power yoga. I always break a sweat, and I never did with Pilates. I think either one completely depends on the instructor though. |
| I think it depends a lot on what you are looking for, and what specific studio you go to. |
| For me it really depends on the instructor. I remember doing Pilates a couple of years ago, now I am doing yoga. With both, there were some instructors I liked and enjoyed the class and some I didn't and didn't like their classes either. Try both at your gym and see what you prefer and who works better with your style / need |

I prefer yoga, but I (like the other PP) do a pretty hardcore power yoga (with lots of fluid sequences, handstands, jump backs, arm balances, and challenging backbends).
I tried to like Pilates, but in all of the classes I went to, the entire class was done lying down on the floor. Sure, you get some great ab work, but I felt like I didn't get much else. And I felt like there isn't enough done to open up the psoas after all of the crunch-like moves. |
| Never tried pilates, but I love my hot power yoga. Not airy-fairy at all (not that there's anything wrong with gentler yoga), but an incredibly intense workout. For me, it also balances out running very well. |
| Try both. Become a regular with the instructor you prefer. |
| Try both. I love Pilates and yes it's almost all on the floor but the point is to work your core hence all the crunch like moves. I break a sweat but it took me a year to move up a level and then when you know the sequence and move quickly through it you get nice and warm. |
| Pilates if you're looking for strength and muscle tone, yoga if you're looking for something more mind-body. |

I've been practicing yoga for 15 years. I went twice at my gym and will never go again. It's just not the same as practicing at a studio.
I would happily do pilates at my gym, since that's less of a spiritual thing and more of an exercise program. |
I find both to be boring as hell. I'm too jumpy for them...I prefer to keep moving and not have to be in my head so much. What do you prefer? |
You should try a harder yoga class. It is absolutely impossible to be thinking about anything other than the work if you are doing it right (for everything except for pigeon-type poses and savasana). |
| Sounds awful. No thanks. |
