Language Immersion options in PG County

Anonymous
Jeff,

Can we lock this thread. While listening ro the forum tonight, one caller mentioned the need for a Spanish immersion program in the county. While there is, Cesar Chavez Elementary School is a Spanish immersion school and it is under-enrolled. Unfortunately, the school is in need of more resources.

I missed the caller that asked for Spanish immersion. Did they have a response?

She was from upper marlboro. No response from pgcs, which is kind of sad.

Kiki, isn't Chavez only an option for in bounds kids though? Maybe the caller was asking about a lottery based option? But if Chavez is underenrolled and has seats they should have said that to the caller.

Which, on another topic, the transfer to an underenrolled school deadline is already past and they seem really rigid about that deadline. It seems like allowing people who really want to be at a given school to enroll could only help the underenrolled school but they make the deadline really early and seem to put up a lot of obstacles to that type of transfer. I missed the call, but I would have loved to hear them say "yes, we have that at Chavez and we still have seats and we will open those up again to anyone who might be interested."

The caller was the mom of a two and three year old. Good point about the transfer deadline though.

FYI. Chavez is an option only for in bound students and it is not full immersion but dual.

Also, there are plans, for the principal of the Elsie Whitlow Stokes Public Charter School in DC, Dr. Rodriguez-Murillo in coordination with interested area PG parents, to establish a Spanish Immersion Program entitled Maryland International Preparatory Public Charter School.

PG County has two fabulous and thriving Full French Immersion Programs that rival the surrounding counties like MoCo and Fairfax. Full immerson means students learn to speak, read and write fluently and with comprehension. Dual/Two way means the target language is only learned 50% of the day or time; however the curriculum is designed to be provided. This does not necessarily include reading and writing in the target language.

Chavez-zoned resident here. How do we get in on the discussions about this new school.

PP, here. The space allotments for the French Immersion Program are really limited. If you are zoned for a less than desirable school, taking a chance on getting one of those slots is a real gamble. Personally though, a French Immerson program would not be an option for my family.

I do appreciate you posting the information on the new possible Spanish Immersion Charter School. As I have said in my posting before, we would love to help with the development of the school and I do mean in constructive grassroots ways. I am personally trying everything that I can to make the public school system work for my family. I even called my local school to volunteer, left messages twice, and have not received a phone call back .

Now that the students are out, I would probably just go by the school. Administrators should still be there. It is a shame that you have to jump through hoops to figure out how to help, but I think actually meeting some of the admin face to face will help you as well in assessing where they are trying to take the school.

Thank you for posting about about our effort to start an immersion charter school in PGCPS and excited to see this discussion happening.
Just a quick note, Dr. Rodriguez-Murillo is not the principal of Elsie Whitlow Stokes Public Charter School.

Please keep an eye out for additional information about Meet and Greets with the proposed Maryland International Preparatory Founding Board members that are currently being scheduled across the County. We look forward to talking with as many parents and other stakeholders as possible about expanding immersion education opportunities for Prince George's County students be they traditional public or public charter schools . Come out and support the campaign if you can. If you want additional information, feel free to email EmpireEducationGroup@gmail.com.

Definitely would love to see more immersion options
I live near the Hanson French immersion but am not interested in French....we have been teaching Mandarin and Spanish to our toddler and thusfar are considering Maryland International Day School (private) which is not far from us in Ft. Washington.

I think that a language immersion Montessori program like LAMB would be very sought after in my Hyattsville neighborhood. How can we get the county to open up to charters? There are some fantastic charter options within 10 minutes of my house ...in DC. We have thought about moving into the District to enter the charter lottery. What is holding back our county?

Survey Invitation- Support Spanish Immersion in PGCPS

Dear Parents and Community Members:

My Bilingual Child - Parental Advocacy for Spanish Language Immersion Programs in Prince George’s County - is an exciting new grass-roots group. Our vision is a Prince George’s County that nurtures early development of bilingual or multilingual children who excel academically across subjects, interact effectively with people from different cultures, and complete successfully in the global marketplace. ??

We ask that parents and community members residing in Prince George’s County complete this survey and forward it to others for completion by August 31, 2013. The survey link is http://eSurv.org?u=mybilingualchild. The survey will help us assess support for language immersion programs in Prince George’s County, particularly the addition of Spanish Immersion among the options offered by our school district. ??Typically, enrollment at language immersion schools is limited to young children, such as kindergarten through second grade when the elementary-middle school opens and kindergarten only in subsequent years.

We also invite you to like our facebook page at www.facebook.com/mybilingualchild, and join our Google Group (listserv) at my-bilingual-child@googlegroups.com. Visit our website at www. http://mybilingualchild.weebly.com. If you have questions or comments, please contact Delores Millhouse or Gina Bowler at mybilingualchild@gmail.com. Thanks for your participation.

Complete the survey at http://eSurv.org?u=mybilingualchild. Forward the link to other Prince George's County Residents so we can let the Prince George's County Board of Education know that together as a community we will create the educational system our children deserve!

Thank you for your time!

Yes DC has several charter and public schools that offer dual language/immersion options. With the demographics of PG County I don't see why the county doesn't have more.
