Swimsuit for tween, size 000

Anonymous
I am trying to buy my daughter a bathing suit. She's 5 feet tall, has a size 20.5 inch waist, weighs 80 pounds, and does not want to wear a "little girl" swimsuit, especially at the 6th grade promotion pool party. She prefers a two piece suit, but she does not want something teeny bikini, either.

And yes, her waist is only 20.5 inches and that is if she has had a big dinner. Most swimsuits seem to start at a size 23 waist.

Thus far we have looked at Lands End, Aeropostale, American Eagle, Hollister, Kohls, Target (!), and Athleta.

Any ideas?

Old Navy?

Have you tried the slim sizes at Lands End? Not all the suits come in slim, but many of the two pieces do, and you can buy different sizes top and bottom.

Figure out what size she wears in a racing suit (multiple size charts available) then find a good one on sale on Amazon. If you are a prime member you will have it in two days and it will hold up far better than non-race suits. My tiny 10 year old is a 24 or 26 in a race suit and she is shorter, so you are probably looking at a 28 or 30, but check with the manufacturer to be sure. Some of the better brands you can find on sale are Tyr, Speedo, etc. Don't get the ones that come in "normal" kids sizes. They do not hold up worth a darn and gap and bulge. The race suits have far more lycra or whatever in them. Race suits tend to be wickedly expensive but if you check on Amazon some of the less popular colors can be available at a steep discount if the seller is trying to clear them out. Less popular = / =ugly; I've gotten some great ones.

Signed,
Mom of competitive swimmer who, based on the shopping experiences noted above, now has the entire family wearing race suits.

Thanks. We never have luck at Old Navy as the styles are too wide in the waist. She can fit in a size 6X, though. Not what she wants to wear in front of rising middle school age boys, though.

She did not like the look of any of the suits at Lands End, and that was not only for the slim sizes. She has a Speedo suit now that we bought from Kohl's last summer and she really does not want another racing suit style swimsuit.

Thanks for the suggestion! I had not thought of trying Amazon -- I will do some searching there online.

PP you are responding to, here - did you look online or in the store? The store tends to have next to nothing. There are several styles online that are not racing style:
